(Seguin) — Our community has once again shown its love and support for those in need.

There was a massive turnout during Friday’s KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive.

The event raised money, plus new unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items for the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program and the local food pantry, the Christian Cupboard.

The food and toy drive welcomed some special guests, including Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez.

Dr. Gutierrez says he’s thankful for events, like this, that give back to the community.

“I’m proud to be here. I’m proud of our representation with the Mariachi and our Mighty Matador Band. This is what is really kicking off the holiday season in Seguin and so I always appreciate this opportunity to come out and take donations in the form of toys or monetary donations because they go to our kids. Many of our kids benefit from this amazing event,” said Gutierrez.

Dr. Debbie Cottrell, the president of Texas Lutheran University, was also on hand for the celebration.

She brought with her a number of students from TLU.

Dr. Cottrell says the university thinks it’s important for students to get involved any way that they can in the community.

“This is their community. This is their home and many are from this area but even for those who come from farther away, we want them to know that this is our home and that they not only get to be a part of this community, they get to help the community,” said Cottrell.

Those that missed the big event, which included several performances by students from the Seguin and Navarro school districts, should know that there is still time to give.

Donations will continue to be accepted at the KWED studios, located at 609 E. Court St.

KWED Radio thanks all those who gave and who will continue to give. This includes this year’s Food & Toy Drive sponsors.

That list includes: Wal-Mart; GiGi’s; Su Casa Café; Bill Miller’s; Court Street Coffee; Buddy’s Rentals; Steel Hyundai New Braunfels: HEB; Palms Restaurant; Arlan’s; Diamond Air and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.
