Navarro Girls Win Battle of Neighboring High Schools in Monday Matinee

Navarro's Tegan Harborth dribbles while Seguin's Desiree Zuniga defends

(Seguin) — In a battle between schools separated by just a few miles, the Navarro Running Lady Panthers traveled down to Seguin to take down the Lady Matadors in a defensive struggle on Monday afternoon, 33-20.

Both teams tried to shake off weary legs as each team played five games in the Floresville Girls Basketball Tournament over the weekend. Navarro took an 18-11 lead into the locker room and held the Lady Mats scoreless in the 3rd as the teams only combined for 5 points in the period.

Navarro head coach Darrell Harborth said his team battled defensively even though their shots weren’t falling.

“I tell the girls if you struggle scoring the ball, you gotta play defense. I preach defense to them and I was proud of our defensive (today). We can always rebound the ball better, but we are an undersized team and Seguin had a couple big kids that made it hard on us, but I’m proud of our defensive effort and our effort overall.”

Tatum Harborth lead the Lady Panthers on the scoreboard with 17 points while Karlee Koenig added 9 points.

The Lady Matadors were lead by forward Jazmine Missildine who scored 9 points despite getting into early foul trouble. Seguin first year head coach Veronda Kendall says early fouls kept Jazmine from getting off to a good start.

“(It) took her awhile to get going, but she is somebody we rely on to score. Of course we need consistent scoring from all of our guys.”

The Lady Panthers improved to 8-1 on the season while the Lady Matadors fell to 2-7. Navarro next plays on Wednesday at home against Devine while Seguin has off until next Tuesday.
