(College Station) –The A&M Consolidated Tigers scored 28 consecutive points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters in taking down the Seguin Matadors 35-20 on a rainy and windy Friday night in College Station, ending the Mats 2022 season in the UIL Bi-District round of the Class 5A Region 3 Division 1 playoffs.
The young quarterbacks for each team exchanged touchdown runs in the first quarter as Tiger sophomore Will Hargett hit paydirt on a 25 yard run and Matador freshman Corey Dailey scored on a one yard sneak. The touchdown by Dailey was set up by a 39 yard punt return by Seguin senior receiver Devin Matthews that took the ball down to the Consol one yard line.
In the 2nd quarter, Matthews would field another punt and race through and past Tiger defenders on an electrifying 84 yard punt return down the right sideline to give the Matadors their only lead of the game at 14-7. A&M Consolidated would add three TD’s to the scoreboard in the rest of the quarter to take a 25-14 lead into the half.
In the 3rd quarter, Tiger running back Keshun Thomas rambled 48 yards through the Seguin defense for his second touchdown of the night to increase the Consol lead to 32-14. Tiger kicker Mo Foketi added a 22 yard field goal later in the quarter to push Consol’s lead to 21 points.
Late in the 4th quarter, Matthews scored his 21st touchdown of the season on a one yard hookup with quarterback Dailey to complete the scoring on the night.
The Matadors, who extended a program record with their 5th straight playoff appearance, finished the season with a 6-5 overall record.
