(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors fell into a three-way tie for 2nd place in District 12-5A following a 27-14 loss to New Braunfels Canyon at Matador Stadium on Friday night. Former Seguin head coach Travis Bush avenged his team’s 28-21 loss last year in the same stadium.
The Cougars were lead by quarterback Duece Adams, who threw for three scores as Canyon scored touchdowns on four of 5 possessions from the end of the second quarter until late in the fourth quarter. Adams threw two of his TD passes to his brother Eli and another to Xayvion Noland. The Cougars also got a rushing TD from Elias Gonzales during their scoring spurt.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Matadors got on the board first. Freshman quarterback Corey Dailey found junior wide out Isaac Garcia for a 7 yard touchdown strike to cap an 11 play, 80 yard drive. The Cougars would score the next 27 points in the game before Seguin scored in the final minutes of the 4th quarter on a 41 yard pass from Dailey to sophomore Nik Henry on a 4th and long play.
Following the game, Seguin head coach Craig Dailey told his team that they still control their own destiny in the district.
“If we win out, we get a share of the district title. So there’s nothing you can do about tonight. We’ll look at the video tomorrow, get better (and) go to work next week to hopefully beat Wagner at home for senior night and then get a chance to go play for the share of the district title against Smithson Valley. So they can still achieve all their goals.
The night started with a ceremony on the field before the game as former Seguin star student-athletes Stephanie LaFerrara Thomas and Dexter Ransom were inducted into the Seguin ISD Athletic Hall of Honor. LaFerrara Thomas, a 2006 grad, starred on the Lady Matador softball and basketball teams. Ransom, who graduated in 2007 was a standout on the football field and the basketball court for the Matadors.
With Friday’s loss, the Matadors fell to 4-1 in district and into a 2nd place tie with Canyon and San Antonio Wagner. Smithson Valley shutout Boerne Champion 49-0 on Friday to take over sole possession of first place in the district at 5-0. Seguin will host Wagner next Friday night.
