Matadors Welcome Canyon Cougars and Former Coach Back to Seguin Friday

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today
Matadors Welcome Canyon Cougars and Former Coach Back to Seguin Friday

Seguin Matador freshman quarterback Corey Dailey (#4)

(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors will welcome back former head coach Travis Bush to Matador Stadium for the 2nd straight year as they host the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars on Friday night. Seguin is looking to stay atop the District 12-5A standings and beat their former coach in consecutive seasons. Seguin is 4-0 in district and tied for first with Smithson Valley. The Cougars are 3-1 in district play and tied for third place in the district.

Tomorrow is also Seguin Athletic Hall of Honor night at Matador Stadium and Matador head coach Craig Dailey says his team will need to ignore distractions and keep their emotions in check against the Cougars.

“It’s gonna be a jam-packed stadium. It’s Hall of Honor night here.  We can’t let the history of their coaching staff get us too emotional.  I think there are four or five guys that are on that staff (that were here). It’s gonna be an up-and-down game like the Hays game. We have to make sure we stay even-keel like we did in that game and really not just this game, but this whole stretch, these last four games. They’re all playoff-caliber teams in this district and we can’t too high or low. I think that’s the biggest thing.”

The Matadors beat Bush and the Cougars 28-21 last season in Seguin. Bush served as the head coach and athletic director at Seguin from 2016 until 2020 before leaving to take the same position at Canyon. The Cougars missed the playoffs in his first year at Canyon, but are in the thick of the race in his 2nd season. Friday night’s game has a 7:30 kickoff at Matador Stadium. You’ll hear the game right here on KWED.

The Navarro Panthers and Marion Bulldogs are also in action on Friday. The Panthers are 2-0 in District 13-4A and will battle fellow unbeaten district foe Wimberley on the road. The Marion Bulldogs are 1-2 in District 13-3A and will host Ingram Moore in district play on Friday.

We’ll talk with both Navarro head coach Rod Blount and Marion head coach Ryne Miller during our High School Football Friday night coverage. The Panther report starts our coverage at 6:45 pm. We’ll follow with the Bulldog report and then we’ll go to Matador Stadium for our Matador pre-game and talk more with coach Dailey on the Matador Report all on AM 1580 and streaming online worldwide at SeguinToday.com.
