SEGUIN, Texas — Madison Weisinger, a fifth-year senior middle blocker on the Texas Lutheran women’s volleyball team, has been selected as the SCAC Character and Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning with October 10.The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
While you can find the Friendswood, Texas, native excelling on the court so far this season – leading the SCAC in block assists (63) and second in hitting percentage (.369) and total blocks (74) as the Bulldogs continue their best start in over a decade – by day, you can find the Education major student-teaching at Koennecke Elementary.
“My journey into teaching began with my love for coaching. I had an amazing volleyball coach, Vanessa Seghers, growing up and she made a huge difference in my life, practically raising me into who I am today,” said Weisinger.
“The lessons she taught me through volleyball made a huge impact on my character and the way I view my life. I am becoming a teacher to share these valuable life lessons through volleyball and in class. Now, I am an assistant P.E. coach at Koennecke Elementary and I love every day of it. I get to build relationships with kids, teach these life lessons, and spark their interests in sports through P.E. I am also learning a ton and growing as a teacher during my time there. I am so thankful for what Koennecke and these students are teaching me. I am looking forward to teaching and coaching, as my career.”
Recently, Weisinger and Texas Lutheran Volleyball hosted “Koennecke Elementary Night,” against Huston-Tillotson with chants for “Coach W” and the Bulldogs echoing through Memorial Gymnasium as the Bulldogs swept the Rams. At the match’s conclusion, Weisinger was surrounded by Koennecke students drowning her in hugs and high fives – making clear her impact off the court as “Coach W” on her young pupils.
Over the course of five years at Texas Lutheran, Weisinger has been a leader and role model for her team and within the Seguin community the Bulldogs serve – making the world a better place along the way and influencing the next generation.
