Matadors Wear Down Boerne-Champion to Stay Tied Atop District 12-5A

Matadors Jakyari Matthews, Jackson Pond and Creed Weaver

(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors remained unbeaten in District 12-5A following a convincing 42-21 win over Boerne-Champion at Matador Stadium on Friday night. Senior running back Jakyari Matthews lead the way for the Mats with three rushing touchdowns as the Seguin running attack wore down the Champion defense in the second half, eating up minutes on the clock and putting the game away.

The Mats scored four times in the 1st half to take a 28-21 lead into the locker room. Senior receiver Isaac Garcia scored the first points of the game for Seguin on a 6 yard touchdown reception from freshman quarterback Corey Dailey. The score was set up by a long punt return by senior wide-out Devin Matthews. Matthews would score on a 69 yard catch and run from Dailey later in the quarter to put the Mats up 14-7. Two TD runs from Jakyari Matthews in the second quarter would close out the scoring in the half for Seguin.

In the third quarter, Holt Haas would score on a one yard run that was again set up by Devin Matthews, this time on a long catch and run that put the Matadors in the red zone. The Seguin defense would force a Charger punt and Jakyari Matthews would score his third TD of the night on the Mats next possession with a 5 yard rushing score.

Seguin would use stops by their defense and the running combination of John Jackson and Jakyari Matthews in the fourth quarter to whittle away the clock and secure their third district win.

After the game, Seguin head coach Craig Dailey said his team was physical on both sides of the ball and that allowed them to control the clock in that fourth quarter.

“We’re a physical, hard nosed play hard football team and tonight I think we showed that on both sides of the ball. I think if you want to win championships, that’s what you gotta do. You gotta be able to run the football in the second half and play great defense. And once we got that three possession lead, our kids did a great job of using the clock.”

The Mats out-gained the Chargers 436 to 243 in total yardage using a balanced attack of 222 yards on the ground and 214 yards through the air. Seguin is tied a top the district with Smithson Valley at 3-0. The Rangers shutout Lehman 48-0 at home on Friday night. The Matadors will face the Hays Hawks on the road next Friday. Hays fell to 2-1 in district after falling 44-41 at New Braunfels Canyon.

In other area football action Friday night, the Marion Bulldogs got a big win in District 13-3A blasting the Blanco Panthers 48-6 in Marion.

And the Navarro Panthers won their District 13-4A opener on the road at Lago Vista, 42-21.
