Volunteers still needed for this year’s Guadalupe County Fair
(Seguin) – A local organization is looking to coral a few good volunteers at this year’s Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo. The parking lots and the beer garden are in need of individuals wishing to give of their time and all for a good cause.
Manning this year’s fair parking and beer booths will, again, be the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Guadalupe and Comal Counties.
Misti Abrameit-Guenther, a member of the Relay event leadership team, says the partnership is a win-win for both the group and the fair association.
“The fair and the fair board need volunteers also. So to entice groups to be able to help, one way that we’ve teamed up is that they have brought in Relay for Life of Guadalupe and Comal County also the American Cancer Society to come in and share some responsibilities. So, we come in and we handle the parking for them and by parking, we get a percentage of the sales of the parking. So in one hand, we are definitely raising money for the fair and then we also get to give back to our organization for all the volunteers that we bring and the parking that we are able to do. In the same way, they need volunteers and they need to be able to count on people so they brought in us to help out in the beverage areas in the rodeo arena and also at the dance slab so we bring our volunteers and we make sure that we have volunteers there,” said Guenther.
Guenther says over the past four years, the group has welcomed a wide range of volunteers — volunteers who roll-up their sleeves and give back to the community.
“One of the things that I always want to make sure that people know is that pretty much anybody can do this. We have a job for everyone. Some of our volunteers, poor thing one of them was out there in a walker. The more people, the easier it is for people to get the job done. We have people who collect money as you are pulling up. We have people who just help direct traffic so that they know that they need to go up the hill instead of going the other direction, maybe move a couple of cones. We have people who work in the actual parking area to help to make sure that we don’t leave too big a gap so we can get as many cars in the parking area as possible. We just have multiple different ways for people to help us. I know the fair is also looking for people to work in the ticket booths and things like that so maybe it’s something that I don’t have a specific spot for, I know we can find a spot for anybody,” said Guenther.
This year, the fair association on Saturday will be adding a free shuttle service from 5 to midnight for those who want to park at the Seguin Wave Pool and Columbus Club of Seguin Hall. Guenther says although this will lessen the pressure of her team that night, she knows the demand will still be great.
“The free shuttle is great. We will make sure that one of our lanes is open so that we can definitely allow the bus to come in and drop them right there at the front. It takes off a little less pressure for us because we tend to fill up every Friday and every Saturday and the overflow parking even fills up so they needed that bus to be able to make it but absolutely people can still come park and pay their $5 and we will get them a spot,” said Guenther.
