BBQ cook-off, mutton bustin among the events

(Seguin) — Families this weekend will have a sneak peek into this year’s Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo. Pre-fair events are set to run this Friday through Sunday at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds.

Gail Damerau, a member of the fair association, says for years, events have been held the weekend before. She says among the events is the annual barbecue cook-off.

“We are going to start off the weekend with a CBA State Championship Barbecue Cook-off and that will be down at the fair facilities off of Nelda Street in Seguin and then on Saturday, they will do their whole cook-off, Jackpot Beans, the whole nine yards. If you are interested in judging barbecue just look that up on the website at gcfair.org and find that barbecue cook-off tab and you can get all the details and contacts on coming down there to do that,” said Damerau.

Damerau says children are also invited out to the arena for the fair’s annual Mutton Bustin Bonanza. She says the contest gives kids the chance to advance and compete for prizes at this year’s rodeo.

“On Saturday, we also have our big Mutton Bustin Bonanza so that check-in is going to start at 3 o’clock and then after they get their books all settled and completed, they are shooting for a bonanza start riding time of 5 p.m. on Saturday at the rodeo arena so they are going to do some pre-activities with the kids. So, between that 3 and 5 o’clock (hour), it might be a little stick horse riding and different things like that going on but that will be the mutton bustin part of it,” said Damerau.

Contest details for both events can be found in the official fair catalog available at a number of locations around town including at Seguin Radio KWED located at 609 E. Court St. They can also be found online at gcfair.org. The Guadalupe County Fair is set for Oct.5-9.
