(New Braunfels) — The Seguin Lady Matador volleyball team came up short on the road to the top team in District 26-5A on Tuesday night falling to New Braunfels Canyon in straight sets: 25-9, 25-12 and 25-13. The Cougarettes tall lineup was dominant at the net finishing numerous points with strong smashes and coming up with key blocks. Canyon improved to 6-0 in district and 32-6 overall while Seguin’s district record dropped to 3-4. The Lady Mats are 19-18 overall on the season.
Seguin was lead by senior outside hitter Julie Kocian who had 9 kills. Kocian and senior middle hitter Regan Schmidt also came up with a number of blocks for the Lady Mats in the third set. Seguin coach Ashley Farris said Schmidt and Kocian’s efforts helped keep things close early in the final set.
“Julie and Regan I think stepped up big. Julie has been stepping up a lot for us this season, so I changed the lineup to have her out there all six rotations in that third set which obviously helped. (…) She’s kinda carrying the momentum of the team right now and we really just need everyone else to match that.”
Junior outside hitter Keighly Dailey also added 6 kills for the Lady Mat attack. Seguin has dropped their last three district matches and will look to break their losing streak on the road this Friday against Smithson Valley. First serve is set for 7 pm.
