(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors started District 12-5A play with a win at homecoming on Friday night over the Lehman Lobos 39-7. For the second straight game, freshman quarterback Corey Dailey tossed four touchdown passes, two in each half. The Mats got on the board in the 1st quarter when Dailey found a streaking Isaac Garcia for a 60 yard strike down the middle of the field for a touchdown. Dailey would later hit senior Devin Matthews for a 26 yard score in the 2nd quarter to put the Mats in the lead for the first time, 14-7. Seguin would get a safety near the end of the half on a bad snap near the Lobo goal line to take a 16-7 lead into the locker room.
The 2nd half started with Matthews taking a kickoff return 75 yards to pay-dirt to put the Matadors up 23-7. Following an interception by sophomore Gavin Gill, Dailey would find his tight end Jackson Pond for a two yard TD pass to increase the Seguin lead to 30-7 in the 3rd quarter. Dailey would find Pond again for his 4th touchdown pass of the night later in the 3rd and the Matadors would tack on another safety on a fumble in the Lehman endzone following a 63 yard punt by junior Landon Trost that pinned the Lobos deep.
After the game, Seguin head coach Craig Dailey said the Matadors preparation lead to good results in getting the homecoming win.
“We had a great week of practice and I think it kinda showed on the field tonight. We prepared well so we played a lot better. Early on they gave us a little different run looks so we had to adjust at halftime. Our defensive staff did a really good job adjusting to the runs that were hurting us. Offensively, most of the time we were clicking on all cylinders.”
Corey Dailey finished 14 for 22 for 217 yards, one interception and 4 TD’s. Junior running back John Jackson had 90 yards on the ground on 16 carries. Seguin improved to 3-1 on the season with the district opening win. The Mats will play next Saturday in San Antonio against the MacArthur Brahmas. You’ll hear the game here on AM 1580 KWED and SeguinToday.com with a 7:30 kick.
