(New Braunfels) — The New Braunfels Unicorns used some sustained 1st half drives while keeping the Seguin Matadors offense at bay in a 31-7 win in the Guadalupe River Bowl at Unicorn Stadium on Thursday night. After the Mat offense stalled on their first two drives, the Unicorns got on the board first when junior quarterback Leighton Adams found wide-out Landon Marsh down the middle of the field for a 40 yard TD pass to pay-dirt late in the first quarter. The Matadors would drive down the field on their ensuing drive, but turned the ball over on downs after driving down to the New Braunfels 25 yard line. The Unicorns would take the ball the other way and finish another drive with an 8 yard TD pass from Adams to running back Tyree Johnson for a 14-nothing lead in the 2nd quarter.
After a Seguin punt, New Braunfels drove down the field once again, capping a drive with a 4 yard TD run by Adams making the score 21-0.
The Matadors would get a 48 yard run on their next drive from Devin Matthews to take them to the New Braunfels 32 with one second left on the clock, but on the next play freshman quarterback Corey Dailey would see his heave into the end zone picked off to end the half.
Adams would a 29 yard TD pass to Johnson in the 3rd quarter and the Unicorns would add a 33 yard field goal from senior Kade Wenzel to complete their scoring in the 4th. The Matadors got on the board late when Dailey hit Matthews in stride along the right sideline for a 45 yard touchdown to get Seguin on the board.
Dailey finished the game 14 for 26 through the air for 136 yards and a touchdown. Matthews caught 5 balls for 76 yards including that touchdown. Junior running back John Jackson lead the Mat rushing attack with 32 yards on 11 carries.
The Mats will be on the road next Friday in Laredo to take on the United Longhorns with a 7 O’clock kick.
