(Seguin) — The Seguin Lady Matador volleyball team took down a tough San Antonio Southwest team last night at Goldie Harris Gym. The Lady Mats earned a hard fought victory in four sets, knocking off the Lady Dragons 23-25, 25-18, 27-25 and 25-20.
Senior hitter Regan Schmidt led Seguin with 16 kills while Junior Keighly Dailey had 13 kills to go along with 18 digs. Senior Ashley Aguilar had 19 digs to lead the Lady Mats in that category.
Sophomore Karina Lerma had an incredible 38 assists as she set up Lady Mat hitters all night long. Seguin Head Coach Ashley Farris raved about Lerma after the game saying Lerma continues to improve as a setter.
“Talk about the excitement I have that that girl is only a sophomore. She’s done an incredible job of running the show. Every game, she’s getting better. Every game, she’s getting smarter. Every game, she’s progressing more and more. The setting position is very hard. You have to process a lot. You’re expected to be the fastest girl on the court and the smartest girl on the court and she’s just been doing a really good job in executing in all those areas.”
Southwest was denied their 20th win of the early season by the Lady Mats, falling for only the 5th time on the season. Seguin moved 2 games over .500 on the year with last night’s victory improving their record to 15-13. The Lady Mats will next be on the road on Friday to take on San Antonio East Central.
In other action on the court last night, the Navarro Lady Panthers fell on the road to Cibolo Steele 25-12, 17-25, 25-17 and 26-24. Navarro will play at Jourdanton on Friday. And the Marion Bulldog volleyball team dropped their match in Bandera last night. Marion hosts Natalia on Friday.
