Seguin Matadors Ready to Kickoff Season Tonight at Matador Stadium

(Seguin) — The high school football season starts tonight. The Seguin Matadors host the Alamo Heights Mules at Matador Stadium. The Mats are coming off a 6-5 campaign in Head Coach Craig Dailey’s first season. Seguin will have a new quarterback at the helm to lead the Matador attack. Freshman Corey Dailey won a three-way battle for the starter spot in the pre-season.

The coach’s son will make his first start tonight for the Matadors and Head Coach Craig Dailey says he feels they have enough play-makers around him to take pressure off the freshman signal caller including returning senior wide-out Devin Matthews.

“Devin showed what Devin does in the scrimmage (last week). Isaac Garcia is another wide-out who is tough to double. Our fullback and our tight end really caught the ball, Jackson Pond and Holt Haas. You can’t double all of them. Both of our running backs also looked good, John Jackson and Jakyari Matthews. So we have a lot of guys to take some pressure off the quarterback on the offensive side of the ball.”

The Matador defense lost a couple of top tacklers off their unit from a year ago, but Dailey says Junior safety Donovan Cray is back and he expects him to be the quarterback on that side of the ball after playing every game for Seguin last year as a sophomore. Evrin Contreras and Jakob McLeod are also back to anchor the defensive line along with Hayden Ross at outside linebacker.

Alamo Heights went undefeated in the regular season last year finishing 13-1 overall, but KENS-TV in San Antonio reports the Mules will have 21 players suspended for tonight’s game due to an alleged hazing incident.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm at Matador Stadium. We’ll have all the play-by-play action for you right here on KWED, plus we’ll visit more with Coach Dailey with the Matador Report just prior to kickoff.

Also around the area, the Navarro Panthers are on the road tonight to take on the Navasota Rattlers and the Marion Bulldogs will host the Hondo Owls. High School Football Friday Night gets underway on KWED and streaming online at SeguinToday.com with the Navarro Panther Report followed by the Marion Bulldog Report at 6:45 this evening.
