Navarro Sweeps and Seguin Wins 5-Set Thriller in Volleyball Tuesday Night

Navarro's Tegan Harborth

(Geronimo) — The Navarro Lady Panther volleyball team swept past Poth while the Seguin Lady Matadors took out Floresville in an intense 5-set battle on Tuesday night.

Playing in front of a big home crowd, Navarro took down the Lady Pirates in straight sets: 25-17, 25-21 and 25-17.

After taking the first set, the Lady Panthers got off to a slow start in the 2nd set, falling behind 13-9. Navarro Coach Misty Fletcher called a time-out and she said she encouraged her team to pick up their effort at that point.

“We needed to finding our intensity, find a second gear (and) not let back. So (we) just (needed) refocusing ourselves, getting intense, finding that second gear and going right back at them.”

The pep talk from Fletcher worked as the Lady Panthers rallied to take the second set. Senior Tatum Harborth capped off the rally with the winning volley to end the set.

The Lady Panthers got great play from the sister combination of Morgan and Taylor Helms. Both sisters were continually set up by their team-mates leading to a number of kills throughout the match. With the win, Navarro improves to 5-11 on the season. The Lady Panthers will next play in the Kerrville-Tivy Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Over at Goldie Harris Gym last night, the Seguin Lady Matadors took down the Floresville Lady Tigers in five sets: 25-16, 14-25, 25-22, 22-25 and 15-10.

The teams went back and forth in closely played 3rd and 4th sets. Seguin coach Ashley Farris credited junior outside hitter Lizzie Suarez for keeping the Lady Mats in the match with some big kills. Farris also said sophomore Karina Lerma was instrumental in setting up her team-mates for some great smashes.

Farris called the 5-set battle a breakthrough moment for the program as the win moved the Lady Mats over .500. Seguin is now 11-10 on the season. Next up, the Lady Mats host the Seguin Tournament this Friday and Saturday.

Also on the volleyball court on Tuesday night, the Marion Bulldog volleyball team fell on the road to San Antonio Wagner in 4 sets.
