Area Teams Kickoff Volleyball Season Tuesday Night

(Marion) — The Marion Bulldog volleyball team started their season on a winning note taking down Poteet last night in front of a big home crowd. The Bulldogs swept the Lady Aggies in 3 sets, 25-13, 25-18, 25-18.

Marion head coach Melissa Mitchell Schuetz says the Bulldogs had some early nerves, but she was happy with the team’s effort.

“We still got a lot to work on, but I’m proud (of) the way the girls handled the nerves. They were super excited to know that we actually had a crowd. School isn’t in so people don’t know about the game. As the tickets kept selling, the girls kept getting more nervous but I’m very proud about the way they settled themselves (…) and took care of business.”

The Bulldogs got off to a fast start thanks to some fancy serving from junior Kacee McLendon. Marion took a 6-0 lead to start the first set and breezed the rest of the set.

Junior hitter Kamryn Garza, who missed most of last season with a broken shoulder, came up big with several kills for the Bulldogs. Junior Maggie Rudisaile and senior Mabee Hayley also had a number of kills leading the way to the Marion victory.

The Bulldogs will next head to Wimberley this weeked for the TEX-FEST tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Seguin Lady Matador volleyball team was also victorious on Tuesday night earning a sweep of San Antonio Roosevelt on the road, 25-12, 25-14 and 25-23.

And the Navarro Lady Panthers fell to the Victoria West Pirates on the road last night, 25-21, 25-13, 26-24.
