Seguin Football 2022 Preview

Seguin receiver Devin Matthews

(Seguin) — The high school football season starts in exactly three weeks and the Seguin Matadors are looking to build off a successful first season for head coach Craig Dailey.

Seguin finished 3rd last year in the old District 12-5A and this year’s new district has some familiar foes for the Mats. MacArthur, Boerne Champion, New Braunfels Canyon and Hays are just a few of the opponents Seguin will see during the district season. Dailey says the new district will present them with challenges.

“It’s a good district from top to bottom. It’s very similar I think to the one we just left. I don’t think it’s gonna be much different than last year, but you’re gonna have to play week in and week out. We’re gonna be battle tested. It’s a playoff game every week.”

Seguin’s varsity squad will start practices on Monday. Senior star wideout Devin Matthews will be back in the fold for the Mat-attack. Matthews averaged over 100 yards receiving per game in 2021. Dailey is excited to have him back, but Matthews will have a new quarterback tossing to him this year as three players are competing in an open quarterback competition.

“Devin Matthews is a special player. He’s gonna be tired every game. He’s gonna play on both sides of the football, he’s gonna be in the return game. .. We got three guys battling (at quarterback), a junior, a sophomore and an incoming freshman. We’ll see who wins that job.”

The Matador defense lost a couple of top tacklers off their defense from a year ago, but Dailey says Junior safety Donovan Cray is back and he expects him to be the quarterback on that side of the ball after playing every game for Seguin last year as a sophomore. Evrin Contreras and Jakob McLeod are also back to anchor the defensive line along with Hayden Ross at outside linebacker.

Dailey says he feels good about the senior leadership on this year’s team. Those leaders will be tested in game one as the Mats host the Alamo Heights Mules on August 26th at Matador Stadium and of course you’ll hear that game right here on KWED and streaming online worldwide at SeguinToday.com.
