(Seguin) — Steady improvement in Seguin ISD schools is the big takeaway from preliminary state accountability data, with six campuses earning a B rating. That’s according to Seguin ISD officials who say that both Patlan and Rodriguez elementary schools jumped two letter grades, improving from a D to a B. Jefferson Avenue Elementary School and the Mercer-Blumberg Learning Center (MBLC), both formerly C schools, also improved to the B rating. The district says it is also proud to announce that Koennecke and McQueeney elementary schools maintained their B ratings.
Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez says he is proud that there are six B campuses in the Seguin ISD. With four of the six improving one to two letter grades, he says it shows that they are making progress in the classrooms. Plus, he says their teachers are providing instruction with fidelity and campus administrators are using the strategic plan as their daily blueprint.
Dr. Gutierrez says this preliminary accountability data for the STAAR test (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) represents the best campus ratings since 2010.
He says improvement is happening and it is imperative that they continue to build upon it.
Notable increases for the district also include a 19 point jump at Rodriguez, 17 points at MBLC, 16 points at Patlan and 13 points at Vogel Elementary.
Meanwhile, Vogel is projected to move from a D to a C while Weinert Elementary and Seguin High School will likely keep their C ratings.
Although Barnes and Briesemeister middle schools will likely not be rated, district officials say both schools are expected to increase six points each.
Gutierrez says the district’s short-term goal is to have each Seguin ISD school earn at least a B rating. He says thanks to teachers and campus administrators, they are headed that way but still have plenty of work ahead of them.
The state accountability system began assessing campuses with letter grades in 2019. Campuses were not officially assessed during the 2020 and 2021 school years due to the COVID pandemic.
While the current 2022 campus accountability data is preliminary, the Texas Education Agency will release official ratings on Aug. 12.
Meanwhile, the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is also scheduled to comb through even more of this year’s testing data during tonight’s special board meeting. That meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Seguin ISD Board Room. The public is welcome to attend.
