(Seguin) — Wednesday proved busy for area firefighters as departments from all over worked to contain a blaze on the east end of Seguin.
Fire officials say 100 plus acres of land were destroyed after a house fire sparked a grass fire in between Highway 90 and Country Acres. The fire was reported just after 2 p.m. in the 4300 block of US Highway 90 East.
Assistant Fire Chief Garrick Herbert says the fire proved challenging for firefighters as they not only worked to contain the fire but worked to protect surrounding homes that were also being threatened. Herbert says the winds made all efforts incredibly challenging. He says at the end of the day, he estimates that 20 to 30 structures were saved due to firefighting efforts.
Officials says due to the dry conditions and high winds, the fire moved rapidly north burning both the north and south sections of the railroad tracks that run parallel to the highway.
Herbert says in addition to the fully involved fire, a barn was also destroyed. He does confirm that a person on scene suffered injuries and was transported to GRMC. He says three firefighters were also treated and later released for heat exhaustion.
Herbert says crews on Thursday continued to mop up some of the hot spots within that containment area.
Officials say close to a dozen fire departments assisted along with the Texas Forestry Service.
Roxianne Maurelli who lives in the 4100 block says the fire stopped 150 yards from her house and credits firefighters for working hard to contain it.
