(Seguin) – Seguin has two more days and only one more night in which to enjoy the patriotic pride that blows in the wind at this year’s Field of Honor display along State Highway 123 Bypass. The crop of 1,000 American Flags planted in the open field next to Faith Lutheran Church is the third time that the local Field of Honor committee has hosted the event. Each dedicated flag is tagged with the name of a service member, veteran, or first responder.
Chairperson Connie Ramirez started the project while her daughter, a Marine, was deployed. She says after she visited a Field of Honor event in a nearby community, she knew she had to bring the fundraiser to Seguin. Now three years later, Ramirez says the event has grown into a local Fourth of July tradition.
“This year, I think we have around 200 flags that have been sponsored and there is still time to come out and still sponsor. They are $30 a flag and Saturday we have closing events at 10 o’clock and they can come and pick up their flag and the pole, but we have a lot of people who come out just to take in the sights and they absolutely love it. They are always telling us how beautiful it is and if you come at night, it’s totally different. It’s really beautiful at night,” said Ramirez.
Ramirez says the seven and a half foot tall flags, displayed in perfect formation, are purchased with proceeds benefiting the American Legion in Seguin.
Ramirez says the flags which were planted Saturday morning are left waving in the wind for a full week. Again, Ramirez says if you want to catch the patriotic sea of read, white and blue, then today and Saturday morning are the only opportunities left.
“We have people that join us every night at 7p.m. for taps. The Fourth of July, we had hot dogs and some people just bring their chairs and sit here and talk with us and we hear all kinds of stories about their war days, their active-duty days, funny ones, sad ones and people just like to talk about their heroes out here,” said Ramirez.
Friday’s events will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church located at 1326 E. Cedar St. Again, those who purchased flags are asked to pick them up following Saturday morning’s closing ceremonies at 10 a.m. Flags can still be purchased that day. Donations made to the event are also welcome.
