Prizes, events, crafts being planned all summer
(Seguin) — You are invited to crack open a book this summer and enjoy the Oceans of Possibilities.
Oceans of Possibilities is the theme of this year’s Summer Reading Experience for both children and adults at the Seguin Public Library.
The free summer program is currently underway.
Children’s Librarian Hannah Farmer says registration links are available online or individuals can stop by the library and get signed up.
“It definitely involves reading and books but also learning and fun activities so it’s a well-rounded experience. It’s free to participate and we have a program for all ages so the way it works is that when you sign up, you can pick up a game board from the library and the game board looks a lot like a bingo card and like I said, they are color coded by age group so we’ve got one for itty bitty kids cause it’s never too early to get started reading to them and then we’ve got one for elementary ages, one for teens and one for adults so the whole family can do it together,” said Farmer.
Farmer says the issued gameboards provide and encourage plenty of activities to help make your summer fun.
“On each square of the gameboard is an activity. A lot of them are reading activities like read for 30 minutes or read a comic book or we have read an award winning book but there are other things as well like complete a puzzle or attend an event at the library and so, we just want to keep it fun and when you complete the gameboard, kids get to earn free two books from us — that they get to keep forever,” said Farmer.
Farmer says maybe the best part of the summer reading program is that there are great prizes that individuals can win at the end of the program.
“For the kids, we are giving away, Lego sets, ZDT tickets, Schlitterbahn tickets all kinds of fun stuff. The Friends of the Library donated some really great prizes for the adults’ summer reading program to encourage adults to model reading for kids in their lives too. Some of those prizes are an Apple TV, an expresso machine and a Bluetooth waterproof speaker. We actually have one of those for the teens as well. Teens get candy and comics gift baskets and Amazon gift cards so chances to win lots of great prizes,” said Farmer.
Farmer says the library has really worked hard to make this year’s Summer Experience the best one yet and encourages families to take advantage of all the special programs it has to offer.
“The theme this year is Oceans of Possibilities so a lot of our events have to do with the ocean, and you should see the library, we decorated for the ocean. It is super fun. Every Thursday morning at 10 a.m. are the events geared toward ages 5 to 11. That’s the age that we really target too to make sure they are reading over the summer so that they are keeping their brains active between their school years because research showed that that is really great for them – that keeps them at grade level just keeping our brains active, so we have events for them to encourage them along the way every Thursday at 10 a.m. We are super excited. We have a lot of fun with ocean themed crafts and science activities and some special guests as well,” said Farmer.
