Tickets on sale for Friday night's performance of Mariachi Girl

(Seguin) – You’re invited to follow the story of a 10-year-old girl who dreams to one day be a mariachi singer.

Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin, with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, will be hosting the production of Mariachi Girl this Friday night at Texas Lutheran University’s Jackson Auditorium.

This will be the first time that the production which has been held in San Antonio will be performed in Seguin.

Alejandro Guerra, program coordinator for Teatro, says the group is excited about hosting the performance for the local community and says the bilingual family musical is “a beautifully written story filled with vibrant traditional mariachi music.”

“It is directed by Jojanie Segura Moreno. Musical direction will be from Gino Rivera. He is the head of Mariachi Azteca De America in San Antonio. Mariachi Girl is about ten-year-old Carmencita dreaming of being a mariachi singer and one day joining in performance with her father. However, her father clings to a long-held family tradition of male-only mariachis. When Carmencita’s teacher offers her a book about a female mariachi, everything changes for ‘Cita’ as she sees a possibility of her dream becoming a reality. So, this play was written by Roxanne Schroeder-Arce, with music and lyrics by Héctor Martínez Morales,” said Guerra

Guerra invites the audience to watch as Carmencita works to celebrate her own heritage and all while attempting to expand her father’s view of the world. Immediately following the performance, audience members will have the chance to talk with the director and actors.

The show will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at TLU’s Jackson Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students 18 and under.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.teatrodeartes.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.

Supporting the funding of this production are the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Guadalupe County United Way, Humanities Texas, San Antonio Area Foundation, Guadalupe County Community Symposium, city of Seguin and many local businesses and individuals.
