Local church delivers record donation to food pantry

(Seguin) — A local church that set the record in December for donating the largest food donation to the Christian Cupboard has again stepped up to the plate to surpass its original record of 42,000 pounds.

Thanks to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the cupboard recently welcomed 45,000 pounds of non-perishable foods.

Bishop Tim Bird says the food was delivered as part of a humanitarian effort to the Christian Cupboard.

“Deseret Industries, the label that you will see on the food items is Deseret Farms. We have orchards and peanut farms, orange crops all over the country and we produce a lot of this stuff. We produce it. We go out. We have volunteers that work on the farms. Here, we have some huge peanut farms down south of San Antonio that our local members will go down maybe twice a year to work as a service day or work the fields and then other members throughout the region, we just kind of rotate so we all take care of things like that,” said Bird.

Bird says the church and its members are fully invested in every aspect of getting the food to where it needs to go. He says from growing to harvesting to packing it and preserving it, the church members ensure a quality product of non-perishable foods.

Here’s the thing too. It’s top-quality products. I mean the food is outstanding. It tastes wonderful and it’s not like it is a second rate or third-rate type food thing. It’s not food that is about to go bad. These products are fantastic and the stuff that we got, that is all non-perishable and so the shelf life on that stuff is years,” said Bird.

The Christian Cupboard continues to collect food as it prepares for the summer months and the families who will be needing some extra assistance.

The Christian Cupboard is located at 516 N. Camp St.  A 24 hour drop off box is located on the northern end of the building.
