Sign-up now underway for step-by-step painting of The Paleta

Teatro to host a Painting with a Cultural Edge event

(Seguin) – The community is invited to join Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin as it celebrates Dia Del Niño.

The free online step-by-step painting workshop will be led by multi-media Chicana artist Debora Kuetzpal Vasquez. During this event, Vasquez will provide a fun history lesson, and teach new art techniques. Upon registering for the workshop, Teatro will verify registration and will provide all required materials needed to participate.

The custom painting that Vasquez has created for Teatro’s participants is “The Paleta.” “The paleta as we know it today started in Tocumbo, Michoacan in the 1940s. Once Mexico won its independence from Spain, ice and cream was made more accessible to all. Mexicanos started experimenting by adding fruit to the cream. Fast Forward to the 1940s where families in Tocumbo perfected the paleta. Teatro organizers say the paleta’s creation speaks to “our people’s resiliency, adaptability, and innovation.”

Vasquez was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. As a child, the Chicana Movement influenced her life, work, and the production of Citlali: La Chicana Super Hero. Currently, Vasquez focus is on Citlalita, a child version of Citlali, and the obtainment of superpowers through las curanderas – women who heal with nature, thus originating her own work with curanderas. Vazquez’s medium is collage, illustration, clay, installation, and film shorts. In 2014, she assumed a tenure track position as assistant professor and director of the Art Program at Our Lady of the Lake University.

This event will be offered to the community free of charge with a limit of 14 youth participants ages 8-18.

To register,  contact Alejandro Guerra, Teatro program coordinator, 830-401-0232 or email teatrodeartes@gmail.com. They may also visit the teatrodeartes.org homepage to register. After registering, each participant will need to pick up the provided supplies such as the canvas, brushes etc. from Teatro’s Cultural Arts Center located at 921 W. New Braunfels St. on Friday, May 13 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Prior to the class, participants will receive a zoom meeting ID and passcode upon registration.

This event coincides with “Humanities Series at El Teatro” and is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities along with local businesses and individuals.
