(Geronimo) – Navarro controls its own destiny for the championship and top playoff seed in the District 27-4A baseball race after shutting out La Vernia 5-0 in Geronimo on Tuesday.
The Panthers’ third consecutive shutout moves Navarro (18-9, 4-1 dist.) into a first-place tie with the Bears and makes Friday’s regular season finale in La Vernia a battle for the outright district title.
Jaxen Monkerud was dominant on the mound in the final regular season home game of his varsity career. The West Texas A&M bound senior pitched a two-hitter and struck out five with no walks in seven innings to earn the complete-game win.
Bryce Nall went 4-4 with a home run and four RBIs to pace Navarro at the plate.
Colton Tolleson drove in a run and scored once.
Marco Moncada went 2-3 with a double and run scored. Jacob Frederick doubled and scored twice.
Navarro has outscored three opponents by a combined margin of 26-0 since losing in Cuero two weeks ago.
The first pitch for the Panthers’ regular season finale in La Vernia is set for 7 p.m. on Friday.
