2018 Seguin murder suspect found in Mexico

Juan Osorio

(Seguin – A 2018 Seguin murder suspect has finally been captured. The Seguin Police Department has announced the arrest of Juan Osorio, 54, of Seguin.

They say on Sunday, March 20, Mexico Law Enforcement and Immigration officials turned over Osorio to the United States Customs and Border Protection at the International Bridge # 2 in Eagle Pass.

Osorio was detained for an active Seguin Police murder warrant and was booked into the Maverick County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Seguin Police officials say it was on Dec. 14, 2018, when the Seguin Police Department responded to the intersection of Dolle Ave and Jones Street for a report of a disturbance which involved a shooting.  The Seguin Police Department determined the victim, Alvaro Carrillo Sotelo, 46, of Seguin was shot by a subject that fled the scene.  Sotelo was transported to a San Antonio hospital where he died a short time later.

An investigation was immediately launched by the Seguin Police Department Criminal Investigation Division. Assistance was also provided from the Texas Rangers.

Osorio was later identified as the suspect in this case. Shortly after the murder, Osorio reportedly fled from Texas to Mexico to avoid arrest and prosecution for his actions.

On Dec. 29, 2018, an arrest warrant was obtained for Osorio’s arrest on a charge of murder. The arrest warrant was issued by Guadalupe County Justice of the Peace Judge Darrell Hunter.

Due to Osorio’s flight to a foreign country, police officials say this case went cold in 2019.

In December 2021, the Seguin Police Department Criminal Investigation Division re-visited this case and asked for the public’s assistance with information pertaining to the whereabouts of Osorio, who was believed to have still been in Mexico.

Osorio was transported back to Guadalupe County on Tuesday, where he was booked for murder, a First-Degree Felony punishable by imprisonment for life or for any term of not more than 99 years in prison.  The criminal case against Osorio will be presented to the Guadalupe County Attorney’s Office.

This case remains under investigation.
