(Seguin) – On your marks, get set, race, walk or volunteer for education.

Kelly Follis, the executive director of the Seguin Education Foundation, says she has some real goals for this year’s Race for Education 5K slated for Saturday, April 2.

Follis says although it’s been a while since the group has hosted a 5K, she is excited about the changes being made to help welcome back the event.

“This event is different. We haven’t had a race for a while and in the past, it’s been at Starcke Park which is great. It’s been in the fall. This year, we are hosting the race at The Backyard which I think adds a whole new level of fun. It also happens to be a Market Days for The Backyard so there is a lot going on over there. It definitely is going to be a great day to be out and about. Our race is just going to be a real pretty race. We are going through Park West and that is always nice. We are going to start the day with Camp Gladiator out there warming us up and then as soon as the race kicks off on April 2 at 9 o’clock, we are going to have some free kids activities at The Backyard and then of course the race will finish at The Backyard and there is not a shortage of things to do around there,” said Follis.

Follis says the event is designed with every fitness level in mind. Not only does she want to see Seguin ISD families participating but encourages anyone in the Seguin community to come out and join in on the fun.

“I want more runners and walkers. We are definitely pet friendly. You can take your time, enjoy your day. You can run as fast as you can. Whatever your personal fitness goals are, we are not there to judge. We are there just to have a good time together and raise some money for a good cause,” said Follis.

With the race just around the corner, Follis is encouraging participants to sign up now.

“It’s a reasonable entry fee. It’s $25 if you get in on the early bird and so hurry up and sign up. Our race logo was designed by a Seguin High School student and it’s really fantastic so you get a t-shirt with your race entry and some other swag that we are working on putting together and then, we will have age group winners in 10 year increments for the top three and then, we’ll have two overall winners and they get something a little bit more special than a medal,” said Follis.

Follis says the Seguin Education Foundation (SEF) is a 501C3 which supports the students and faculty of the Seguin ISD with the “extras” that keep learning fun. She says she hopes that with a few incentives for participants and a different location, supporters will be out in full force April 2.

“Every race participant gets a complimentary drink of their choice. We’ll have some food out there. We are going to have a raffle. I just think it’s going to be a nice day. I know we are going to get a great turnout and I really want to break some records with this race. Races are not super inexpensive to put on. There are some costs behind races. This is a fundraiser for the Seguin Education Foundation, but we also really want to get people out, families out to enjoy the day,” said Follis.

Registration is currently available at https://tinyurl.com/yf7eafxp. Sponsors and volunteers are also needed and may sign up at https://tinyurl.com/v8thsah9. A link for signing-up can be found on the SEF Facebook page.

Packet pick-up is scheduled for Friday, April 1 from 1 to 6:30 p.m. in the Seguin Education Foundation Office located in the Seguin ISD’s Central Office building. Race-day registration and packet pickup will begin at 8 a.m. at The Backyard followed by a pre-race warm up provided by Camp Gladiator at 8:50. The 5K gets underway at 9 a.m., as do the free kids’ activities with Tenderhearted Studio. A raffle drawing and awards ceremony will wrap up the event at 10 a.m. The Backyard is located 225 N. Saunders St.
