Big Texas Fun in Selma inviting its neighbors in Guadalupe County for some Spring Break fun

(Selma) — Do gas prices have you seeking some Spring Break fun closer to home? Well, you don’t have to look farther than just a few miles. That’s because neighbors in Selma are inviting Guadalupe County families to enjoy their week at this year’s 5th Annual Big Texas Fun Crawfish Boil and Carnival.

The full-scale event located on the grounds of Retama Park got underway Wednesday and continues through Sunday, March 20.

Debraun West, of Big Texas Fun, says each day in the midway offers something new.

“This year, we have Monday through Sunday on the second week from the 15th through the 20th, we have a wolf show, the Wolves of the World Show so they are a conservationist company that is actually responsible for saving the wolves at Yosemite, so they bring awareness about the wolves and they’ll be doing a live show the 15th through the 20th. We also have a rocket man. He’ll be shooting out of a rocket over the rides. He’ll be here from the 15th through the 20th. We have a petting zoo, pony rides. We also have the crawfish eating contest. We have one of those left on the last Saturday, the 19th. It’s $500 to the winner whoever eats the most in three minutes,” said West.

West says Talley Amusements again returns to the racetrack grounds with this year’s large size carnival.

“We have the carnival of course and new this year, which was the most exciting news for pretty much most of Texas, Bexar County, Comal County and Guadalupe — all the major counties in this area, we have the largest portable Ferris wheel to ever come to the Greater San Antonio area. It’s really fun and exciting to ride especially at night you can see all the lights. So, that is the newest, biggest attraction we have,” said West.

Unlimited carnival ride wristbands are $30 each and are available Tuesday through Friday. Individual ride tickets will be sold on the weekend.

Other scheduled acts this week include Jean-Pierre and the Zydeco Angels at 3:30 p.m. Saturday; Bad Moon Risin, Credence Clearwater Revival Tribute Band at 7 p.m. Saturday.; Comedian and Juggler Bruce Manners at noon Saturday and 10 p.m. Sunday.; Ethan Hanson at 1:30 p.m. Saturday; Dance Infinity at 1 p.m. Sunday; Young Klassics at 2:30 p.m. Sunday; Trisdon Federic at 4 p.m. Sunday and Broken Duck Feet at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Crawfish/Carvinal hours are Tuesday through Friday are 3 to 10:30 p.m.; Friday 3 to 11 p.m.; Saturday noon to 11 p.m. and Sunday noon to 10 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Parking is $5 a vehicle.

There are no online tickets. All tickets must be purchased at the door.
