Area lifters qualify for THSWPA state powerlifting meet


(Edinburg) – Seguin’s Shalyin Franklin and Sierra Leos, Navarro’s Hailey Garner, Sarah Howard, and Alondra Hernandez, and Marion’s Jaquelyn Fly are all headed to the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s state meet after strong showings in their respective divisions during the Region V meet at Bert Ogden Arena in Ediburg earlier this week.

Franklin and Leos each took fifth place in their weight classes for Seguin in Division I. Franklin advances to state after hitting the qualifying total and lifting 1,015 lbs in the 259 class. She squatted 405 lbs, benched 215, and deadlifted 395. Leos lifted a total of 820 lbs – 315 in the quat, 170 on the bench, and 335 in the dead lift.

For Navarro in Division II, Garner took third place in the 198 class with a total of 880 lbs (380 squat, 210 bench, 290 dead lift). Howard finished fourth in the 148 class with a total of 895 lbs (355 squat, 210 bench, 330 dead lift). Hernandez finished fifth in the 259 class with a total of 895 lbs (405 squat, 215 bench, 275 dead lift).

Fly hit the state qualifying total in Division III for Marion in the 220 class and finished sixth with a total of 925 lbs (390 squat, 190 bench, 345 dead lift).

The THSWPA state meet is March 16-19 at the American Bank Center Exhibit Hall in Corpus Christi.
