Local JP Judge holds onto his courtroom for an additional term

(Seguin) – A pair of attorneys was reportedly unsuccessful in unseating a local judge.

Darrell Hunter, Guadalupe County Justice of the Peace Pct. 1, was the top vote getter in Tuesday’s Republican Primary election.

Judge Hunter, who does not face a Democratic challenger in November, essentially assumes his position after defeating challengers Kelly Cross and Sam “Saundra” Meyer for the Republican nomination.

Judge Hunter left no room for a potential run-off after jumping to a sizeable lead at the initial release of early voting totals. Judge Hunter received 2,964 of the votes cast or 67 percent. Coming in second was Cross with 1,034 votes or 23 percent followed by Meyer with only 409 votes or nine percent.

Judge Hunter says he is appreciative to those who voted for him and who continue to support his courtroom.

“I just want to let everybody know I appreciate your support throughout this whole campaign. It was a clean campaign. I do have to say that. We even had Sam Meyer here visiting with us the whole night, she and her husband were here if you can believe that. We had a really good time. I want to thank all the constituents that kept me in office. If it wasn’t for them, I certainly wouldn’t be here today. It’s going to be back to the office. I’m going to be able to sleep now every night and not have to worry about this anymore,” said Judge Hunter.

Cross says she also thanks voters for coming out to the polls and congratulates Judge Hunter on the win.

“It was remarkable, and I love Guadalupe. I think Hunter is a nice guy and I think our county is in good hands for now,” said Cross.

Meyer says she too congratulates Judge Hunter and looks forward to the future.

“First I want to thank everybody that voted for me. That was really incredible and very generous to have some trust in me like that. I appreciate it more than I can say. I am very happy for Judge Hunter. He is a great guy and yes, he did invite us to come to his watch party tonight and we spent the whole evening there and had a really really nice time. He’s a great person a good judge. Honestly, I thought he was retiring when I threw my hat in the ring and wanted to run so I knew he would be a very hard competitor so once I knew he was running, I didn’t expect to win but I still wanted to give it my best and I look forward to trying again. I’m still going to try again but he’s a great guy, so I want to give him my congratulations sincerely,” said Meyer.

Judge Hunter has served the JP position for the last 23 years.
