Seguin baseball splits two games in abbreviated home tournament
(Seguin) – Due to inclement weather in the area, Seguin only played two games on Friday in its annual home tournament at ‘Smokey’ Joe Williams Field. The Matadors fell to San Antonio Christian 11-0 and edged San Antonio-Wagner 4-3.
San Antonio Christian pitcher Colby Clinkscales threw a four-inning no-hitter against Seguin in the first game.
Seth Cevallos scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth against Wagner on an error after a ground ball by Eddie Homan.
Cevallos went 2-3 at the plate. Cory Mazzurana, Drew Burnett, Nick Carmona, Homan, and Klein Vickers each recorded a base hit.
Vickers drove in two runs, and Mazzurana had an RBI. Carmona, Landon Trost, and Kayden Holz each scored once.
Vickers earned the win on the mound, allowing three unearned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in six innings.
Seguin (2-1) hits the road to open the District 26-5A schedule on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. first pitch at San Antonio-Veterans Memorial.
Seguin softball moves to Del Valle tournament, drops two games
(Del Valle) – Seguin was scheduled to play in the Floresville softball tournament last week, but Floresville cancelled the event due to the weather, so the Matadors joined the Del Valle tournament and suffered a pair of losses on Friday, 6-0 to Del Valle and 4-3 to Hutto.
Ashile Aguilar went 2-3 against Del Valle, and Ryan Rangel went 1-2. Those were the Matadors’ only hits in the game.
Madyson Schultze pitched well in defeat against Hutto. Three of the four runs she allowed were unearned as a result of three Seguin errors. Schultze struck out two, walked three, and allowed six hits in five innings.
Rangel went 2-3 at the plate and drove in all three Seguin runs. Aguilar, Layla Salazar, and Vanessa Sanchez each scored once. Sanchez went 2-3, and Aguilar recorded a base hit.
The Matadors (7-3) host their annual home tournament at Huber Ranch this Thursday – Saturday.
Navarro softball edges 6A New Braunfels-Canyon in Del Valle tourney
(Del Valle) – Navarro earned a 5-3 win over perennial 6A powerhouse New Braunfels-Canyon on Friday in the Del Valle softball tournament, which had most of its games cancelled due to inclement weather in the area.
Samantha Wegman picked up the win in the pitcher’s circle. She allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 4-2/3 innings.
Wegman also drove in two runs and went 1-2 at the plate.
Samantha Mundine went 2-3, scored twice, and drove in a run. Sydnie Stevens also recorded an RBI.
The Panthers (6-3) travel to face Somerset on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
