Playoff Bound! Seguin girls punch post-season ticket with road win over Alamo Heights

The Matadors celebrate clinching a playoff berth on the court at the Mule Dome after Tuesday's win over Alamo Heights.

(San Antonio) – Seguin is headed to the UIL girls basketball playoffs for the first time since 2017 after securing the fourth and final seed in Disrict 26-5A with a 46-35 win over Alamo Heights at the Mule Dome on Tuesday.

Senior post Tresalyn Roberts, a four-year varsity player, played a major role in helping the Mats snap the program’s post-season drought with a game-high 14 points, six rebounds, and five blocks.

“It’s really exciting, and I feel like Seguin hasn’t had that kind of hope in a while, so with us making it this year, it has a lot for future Seguin athletes to look up to, and try to win too,” Roberts said.

The Matadors trailed 16-15 at the end of the first quarter as All-District point guard Rachel Den got off to a hot start and scored nine points for Alamo Heights.

Seguin won the second period 10-4 to take a 25-20 lead into halftime, and finally pushed the margin into double digits in the third period.

Junior guard Reese Brittain banked in a three from several steps beyond the arc to beat the third quarter buzzer and give Seguin a 37-23 cushion going into the fourth. The Mats led by as many as 15 in the final frame, and the Mules came no closer than nine.

Brittain collected nine points, nine rebounds, and four assists, but her biggest contribution was on the defensive end with a game-high seven steals.

Ashlie Aguilar drained a pair of threes and finished with 10 points.

J’Leese Mendez chipped in with five points and three steals. Jazmine Missildine netted four points and gave the Matadors a strong interior presence with seven rebounds. Regan Schmidt and Desiree Zuniga added two points apiece.

Seguin has shown steady improvement in Angie Brittain’s three seasons as head coach to become a playoff program. The Mats went from a 14-22 overall record with a 5-11 mark in district play two years ago to 11-13/ 8-8 last season to 20-16 overall with a 9-7 district record in 2021-22.

Brittain attributes the steady climb to her players putting in the necessary work.

“I’m excited for them,” the coach said. “They deserve it. They’ve been working hard. They came out and executed. Every game, they just get better and better, and I’m just super proud of them.”

Seguin draws the TGCA and TABC’s No. 1 ranked 5A team in the state, Cedar Park, in the bi-district playoffs next week. The time and location details had yet to be finalized at press time.
