Seguin girls fall at home to Tivy
(Seguin) – Seguin is still in the driver’s seat for the fourth playoff seed in the District 26-5A girls basketball race, but the Matadors’ chances of moving up in the standings took a hit Friday night in a 43-29 home loss to Kerrville-Tivy.
The loss drops Seguin to 7-4 in district play, 18-13 overall. New Braunfels-Canyon still holds a tight grip on first place with a 12-0 district record, Tivy sits in second at 10-2, and Boerne-Champion is the third-place team with a 9-2 mark.
Tivy owns the head-to-head tiebreak over Seguin as well with a 2-0 sweep in their head-to-head meetings.
The Matadors trailed Friday’s game 17-9 at the end of the first quarter and 23-16 at halftime. Senior post Tresalyn Roberts kept Seguin in the game with 11 points in the first 16 minutes.
Reese Brittain burried a three late in the third quarter to cut a 10-point Tivy lead to seven, but the Antlers’ Emma Schumacher beat the buzzer from just inside the half-court stripe to make it 35-25 heading into the fourth period.
Tivy pushed the lead to 18 points in the final frame before a late Seguin run narrowed the final deficit to 14.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Seguin head coach Angie Brittain watched an improved effort over the 47-28 loss in Kerrville on Dec. 14.
“All I asked for at the beginning was just go out hard,” Brittain said. “Just play hard the whole entire time, loose balls, anything, and they did those things, so they executed what our game plan was. Tivy is a tough team, they’re very well coached, and they’re very fundamentally strong. It’s always disappointing to lose, but I’m not mad about how we played, because they gave it their all.”
Roberts led all scorers with 15 points. Reese Brittain collected nine points, nine rebounds, six steals, and four assists.
Those two have been Seguin’s statistical leaders all season, and Coach Brittain credits both players for logging gym time beyond the regular practice schedule to elevate their play.
“Tres and Reese have been staying after school every day, and obviously that’s paying off, and they’re putting in work, and there’s no substitute for hard work,” Brittain said. “It comes alive in-game, so the hard work is paying off.”
Desiree Zuniga netted three points. Ashley Lingueno scored two and grabbed seven rebounds. Ashlee Zirkel led Tivy with 12, and Emma Schumacher reached double figures with 10.
The Antlers won the turnover battle, forcing 23 and committing just 10.
Seguin hits the road on Tuesday for a district game against Buda-Johnson at 6:45 p.m.
Seguin boys fall to Antlers in Kerrville, Tuesday game vs. Buda-Johnson to air on KWED
(Kerrville) – Seguin opened the second round of the District 26-5A boys basketball schedule with a 67-56 road loss to Kerrville-Tivy on Friday.
The Antlers jumped out to a 22-15 lead in the first quarter and carried a 33-25 cushion into halftime.
The Matadors hung in with a 17-16 scoring edge in the third period and trailed by seven, 49-42, heading into the fourth. Tivy won the final stanza 18-14 to notch the 11-point win.
John Jackson led four Seguin players in double figures with 13 points. Devin Matthews added 12, Jakyari Matthews and John Jones 11 apiece.
The Mats had a tough time defending Tivy’s Mason Carlile, who pumped in a game-high 26 points.
Seguin is 2-7 in district play, 9-17 overall.

Navarro girls rout Cuero for third straight district win
(Cuero) – Navarro wrapped up the first half of the District 27-4A girls basketball slate in dominant fashion Friday night with a 58-28 road win over Cuero.
Tatum Harborth paced the Panthers’ balanced scoring effort with 15 points.
Berklee Andrews and Laylin Sturm contributed nine points apiece, Ryanne Hepp eight, Tegan Harborth and Taylor Helms four each, and Leah Teasley three. Karlee Koenig, Sienna Kramer, and JJ Martinez each put in two.
Ashley Price and Zavonna Gray led Cuero with 10 points each.
Navarro built a 27-10 lead by halftime and outscored the Gobblers 31-18 in the second half.
The Panthers are 3-1 in district play, 26-5 overall.
Navarro looks to avenge its only district loss Tuesday night in a 6:30 p.m. road game against first-place La Vernia (25-5, 4-0).
Panthers edge Gobblers on Knight’s buzzer beater for first district win
(Geronimo) – Nik Knight drained the game-winning three pointer from the right wing as time expired, and Navarro boys basketball made its first mark in the District 27-4A win column Friday night, outlasting Cuero 60-58 in Geronimo.
Individual stats were not available at press time.
The Panthers improve to 1-2 in district play, 12-15 overall. Navarro hosts La Vernia in a district game on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Marion girls defend home court with win over Randolph
(Marion) – Marion girls basketball completed a 2-0 head-to-head sweep of Randolph in District 26-3A Friday night with a 46-35 home win over the Ro-Hawks.
Sarah Cook led all scorers with 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Jaslyne Williams added 10 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
Breelon Allen snared a team-high 12 rebounds and scored eight points. Laney Osborne chipped in with seven points and three rebounds. Signe Rabenaldt finished with four points, Kaelyn Taylor three.
The Bulldogs are 5-2 in district play, 12-15 overall. Marion hosts Stockdale in a district game on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Marion boys notch fourth straight district win
(Marion) – Marion boys basketball earned its fourth straight District 26-3A win Friday night with a convincing 58-33 home triumph over Randolph.
Ryken Autry scored a game-high 20 points to go with six rebounds and two steals.
Dominic Castellanos also reached double figures with 17 points. Lane Pawelek netted nine points, Richard Rayos and Fernando Romero five apiece.
The Bulldogs improved to 4-2 in district play, 19-6 on the season. Marion looks to avenge one of its district losses on Tuesday with an 8 p.m. home game against Stockdale.
