(Seguin) — Local schools are struggling with staffing shortages caused by COVID-19. The Seguin ISD closed one day last week due to staffing concerns, and now St. James Catholic School and Southwest Prepatory School are both announcing that they will close today due to teacher shortages.

Officials at both the private school and the charter school, located in Seguin, have indicated that they decided not to return today as previously scheduled and they will shut down for the rest of the week. They say employee absences have escalated and many more staff members have tested positive. Classes at St. James and Southwest Prep are expected to resume on Monday.

Meanwhile, schools in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD are also closed today. SCUCISD officials reported similar staffing shortages caused by the virus. The district, which covers a large portion of the western part of Guadalupe County, will be closed today, but they expect to reopen schools tomorrow (Friday).

The Navarro ISD hasn’t had to close its schools, but numbers there are also on the rise. According to the latest data on its online dashboard, a significant number of staff at out, particularly at the elementary level.
