Seguin girls take 2nd place in home soccer tourney

(Seguin) – The Seguin High School girls soccer team hosted its first ever tournament at Matador Stadium last week and came away with a second place finish after three wins, a tie, and a loss during the three-day event.

The Matadors dominated Hondo 9-0 and Poteet 13-0 to open the tournament on Thursday, followed with a 4-0 win over San Antonio-YWLA and a scoreless draw with Gonzales on Friday, and came up short to Kyle-Lehman 1-0 in Saturday’s championship match.

Kaelyn Rhodes and Katalina Adams netted two goals apiece in the Thursday win over Hondo. Jazmin Delmoral, Madison Kirchner, Brenda Sepulveda, Sophia Vela, and Mya Lucio each scored once.

Kirchner also assisted on three goals to finish with a total of five points, and Rhodes delivered two assists to record a team-high six points. Sepulveda and Zoe Villanueva had one assists each. Goaleeper Samara Medina recorded a save to keep the shutout intact.

Villanueva delivered a hat trick with three goals in the win over Poteet. She added an assist for a total of seven points. Rhodes and Adams scored two goals apiece.

Delmoral, Kirchner, Sepulveda, Madison Villanueva, Adela Villereal, and Madison Scott each scored once. Villanueva, Delmoral, Kirchner, Sepulveda, Vela, and Madison Villanueva each had one assist.

Adams scored twice for a team-high four points in the Friday win over YWLA. Zoe Villanueva recorded a goal and an assist. Rhodes added a goal, and Kirchner assisted on one. Medina came up with a save in goal.

Medina recorded three saves in the scoreless draw against Gonzales on Friday, and another in the championship loss to Lehman on Saturday.

Seguin (7-1-1) opens the District 26-5A schedule Tuesday at Matador Stadium with a 7:15 home match against San Antonio-Veterans Memorial.
