An elderly mans loses savings during theft from his truck
(Seguin) — If you’re not familiar with the term “jugging,” then Seguin Police Department wants to make sure you get yourself educated on the subject. Jugging is a type of crime, in which suspects follow you from a bank or from a store, and then break into your vehicle once you stop.
Police Department officials say jugging is a common crime, although it doesn’t happen often in Seguin. The crime was better defined in a press released issued earlier this week by the Seguin PD. The release stated that “criminal suspects will surveil banks, credit unions and higher-end retail establishments watching for unknowing citizens to get into their car and leave with cash or expensive merchandise. The suspects will then follow the potential victim to another location such as a convenience store, gas station, or even a residence, and will unlawfully enter the victim’s vehicle taking money or other belongings.”
The lesson on jugging is being offered because an elderly local man was recently victimized by the practice. Officials say on December 31, the man withdrew a large amount of money from Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union. When he left the credit union, he told police that he noticed a dark gray pick up truck that followed him to the Pic-N-Pac store, located at 969 IH 10 East. It was at that location that the suspect made his way into his vehicle and stole his cash.
It’s a rather brazen crime, that occurred in broad daylight. Police say the video survellience from the store showed a dark gray Toyota Tacoma, with no front license plate, approached the victim’s vehicle. While the victim was pumping gas, a passenger from the Toyota Tacoma entered the victim’s truck though an unlocked passenger door, allegedly removing the money from the vehicle and then fleeing the scene.
Seguin police officers are encouraging people to always be aware of your surroundings, and make sure that you report any suspicious activity. They also say that if you are ever obviously being followed by someone that you don’t know, you should call the police department immediately, or you can also drive directly to the Seguin Police Department at 350 N. Guadalupe St.
Meanwhile, the search is on for the suspect in this latest jugging case. If you have any information about this crime, contact Detective Julian Barrera at 830-379-2123. Anonymous tips can also be made by calling the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers at 877-403-TIPS (8477).
