(Boerne) – The Seguin boys basketball team returned from the holiday break to notch two wins and two losses in four tightly contested ames at the Boerne ISD tournament on Monday and Tuesday.
The Matadors opened the tournament on Monday with a 69-62 loss to San Antonio Christian and closed the day with a 79-74 win over Floresville.
Seguin dropped Tuesday’s first game to Boerne 67-57, then squeaked by Bastrop 67-66 to finish the tournament.
The Matadors led San Antonio Christian 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lions took a 31-28 lead into halftime. Seguin won the third quarter 22-17 to take a two-point advantage into the fourth period, but SAC used a 21-12 run in the final stanza to notch the seven-point win.
John Jackson pumped in 34 points to lead all scorers against San Antonio Christian. Devin Matthews added 10, Jeffrey Rodriguez seven. Jakyari Matthews, Javen Rivera, Kevon Williams, Matthew Martinez, and Nathan Enriquez each scored two points, and J’Dohn Cannon-High hit a free throw.
The Matadors rallied back from a 21-8 deficit in the first quarter to beat Floresville in Monday’s second game. Seguin still trailed by 12 points, 39-27, at halftime. The Mats outscored the Tigers 27-18 in the third quarter and 25-17 in the fourth to turn the momentum and notch the five-point win.
Jackson led four Seguin players in double figures with a game-high 21 points. Devin Matthews netted 16, Rodriguez and John Jones 14 apiece. Jakyari Matthews chipped in with seven points, Williams three, Rivera and Cannon-High two each.
Seguin trailed Boerne 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and 30-22 at halftime of Tuesday’s first game. The Greyhounds won the third period 23-17 to put the Mats in a 53-39 hole going into the fourth quarter, and Seguin was unable to rally down the stretch.
Jones and Jakyari Matthews produced 14 points apiece against Boerne, and Jackson reached double figures with 12. Williams and Rodriguez scored six apiece, Cannon-High five.
Bastrop led Seguin 15-10 after one quarter and 33-30 at halftime in the final game of the tournament on Tuesday. The Matadors edged the Bears 19-16 in the third period and 18-17 in the fourth to log the one-point win.
Jackson paced a balanced scoring attack with 16 points. Three other Matadors hit double figures, with Jones netting 14, Devin Matthews 11, and Rodriguez 10. Cannon-High contributed five points, Jakyari Matthews four, Williams three, R-Teston Tucy two, and Rivera one.
After a 2-2 tournament run in Boerne, Seguin’s season record is 7-13.
The Matadors look for their first district win after an 0-3 start to the 26-5A schedule when they visit Boerne-Champion on Friday at 1 p.m.
