Charges against local judge dismissed

Charges against local judge dismissed

(Seguin) — A local judge no longer faces charges following an incident that landed him behind bars over the summer. According to the Hays County District Attorney’s office, charges against Guadalupe County Court-at-Law Judge William “Bill” G. Squires have been dropped due to insufficient evidence involving an incident that took place at a home in San Marcos with his family.

In a statement released to KWED and the Seguin Daily News, Judge Squires writes, “It has been a long, hard six months as I have waited for the truth to prevail and for my name to be cleared. I had every confidence these baseless, categorically false claims made against me would be fully cleared in due time, but it was a difficult road. I pray my name and reputation will be restored, and my life’s mission of protecting our most vulnerable will once again be back on track. Surviving and overcoming these groundless charges has made me a better, more compassionate judge and has renewed my commitment to the ethos: justice delayed is justice denied.”

It was back in mid-July when Squires was arrested and was transported to the Hays County Jail. At the time, he faced a pair of felony charges, one for one for injury to a child/elderly/disabled person and for criminal negligence and the second for the abandonment endangerment of a child intentional/knowing/reckless criminal negligence.

That’s due to San Marcos Police reports that at the time, alleged that that Squires hit his toddler child with the door during an argument with his wife. The reporting officer said that Squire’s wife was “holding their son,” behind a locked door — when an allegedly intoxicated Squires attempted to push his way into the house, striking the child as he entered. The officer stated that he “inspected (the child) and saw no obvious injury.”

Despite those charges, Judge Squires later on that month remained optimistic that this exact outcome would occur – citing at the time, “During this challenging season of my life and career, I have been pondering the phrase ‘Do as I say, not as I do.’ While the wheels of justice turn slowly (a problem I promised to address within my own courtroom), I want to reassure my community that the baseless claims lodged against me will be cleared in due time, my name and reputation will be restored, and my life’s mission will once again be recognized as one of ‘Do as I do.’ Until that time, I will serve Guadalupe County with passion, integrity, and honesty.”

Squires is currently running unopposed for the Republican nomination in the March 2022 Primary.
