Friday 12-17 Seguin, Navarro, Marion Basketball Recaps

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today
Friday 12-17 Seguin, Navarro, Marion Basketball Recaps

Strong start, solid finish propel Seguin girls to third district win
(Seguin) – Senior post Tresalyn Roberts scored 21 points to help Seguin girls basketball bounce back from Tuesday’s district loss to Kerrville-Tivy with a 54-38 home win over Buda-Johnson at the SHS Student Activity Center on Friday.

The win moves the Matadors to 3-1 in District 26-5A, 12-7 overall.

Roberts netted 13 of Seguin’s 27 points in the first quarter as the Mats used a 15-0 run to lead by as many as 16, but they went without a field goal and only managed a single point on a Reese Brittain free throw in the second period to take a slender 28-23 cushion into halftime.

The Mats recovered their shooting touch in the third quarter with a 14-5 run and led 42-38 going into the fourth. Seguin pushed the lead back to 16 in the final frame, and Johnson came no closer than 10 points.

Seguin head coach Angie Brittain complimented her team for surviving the cold shooting stretch with relentless defense and fighting back into the win column.

“I’m super proud of the way that they played today after that tough loss against Tivy,” Brittain said. “I didn’t even realize that it was 6-1 in the second quarter until my assistants told me that. Our defense has been pretty good this year, and they’ve gotten better where they can switch defenses, and I’m just super excited for them and this win.”

Junior guard Reese Brittain and sophomore forward Jazmine Missildine joined Roberts in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Roberts’ footwork and low post moves have improved considerably this season, and the offense functioned most efficiently when Seguin went to her and Missildine inside against the smaller Johnson frontcourt.

“We were looking for the middle, trying to work their post players, because our post players have been working hard, so we knew we could get some shots down from them,” Coach Brittain said. “I put a lot of pressure on them this year, a lot harder than I ever have, and they love it, and they’re eating it up, and it’s showing on the court, so I’m super proud of them.”

Larissa Galvan added five points for Seguin, Ashlie Aguilar three, Desiree Zuniga and Renee Mata two apiece.

The Matadors head to New Braunfels on Tuesday for a district game against Canyon at 1:30 p.m.

Seguin boys drop road game to Buda-Johnson
(Buda) – Buda-Johnson used a 22-13 run in the fourth quarter to break open a tightly contested game and hand the Seguin boys basketball team a 68-59 loss in District 26-5A on the Jaguars’ home floor Friday evening.

The Mats trailed 33-30 at halftime and won the third quarter 16-13 to tie the game at 46-all heading into the fourth period.

John Jackson poured in 26 points to lead Seguin. Jeffrey Rodriguez added 13, and Devin Matthews reached double figures with 12. The Jaguars limited Kevon Williams to four points, Jakyari Matthews and John Jones to two apiece, and held the rest of the Matadors scoreless.

The loss drops Seguin to 0-3 in district play, 5-10 overall.
