(Seguin) – Seguin head football coach and athletic director Craig Dailey and his staff handed out a number of awards to various Matadors at the team’s banquet earlier this week.
The Most Improved Award on the defensive side of the ball went to junior cornerback Christian Soefje.
On the offensive side, the Most Improved Award went to senior left tackle Henry Cheek.
Offensive MVP honors went to junior receiver Devin Matthews, who finished the year with 58 catches for 1,183 yards and 12 touchdowns.
The Defensive MVP award went to senior inside linebacker Allen Matinez. He recorded 74 tackles, 12.5 tackles-for-loss, 6.5 sacks, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery this past season.
Senior quarterback Troy Falgout and senior fullback Michael Martinez shared the Roger Erck Spirit Award.
The Zach Williams Award for outstanding senior football player went to inside linebacker John Michael Mata.
Senior defensive end and Lamar University signee Ian Box was named the Matador Football MVP after a 2021 season that produced 44 tackles, 15.5 tackles-for-loss, four sacks, four quarterback hurries, and two fumble recoveries.
The aforementioned group helped Seguin go 6-5 and earn the program’s fourth consecutive UIL playoff berth in Dailey’s first season as head coach.
