Seguin boys lose double digit lead in home setback to McCollum
(Seguin) – The Seguin boys basketball team led San Antonio-McCollum by 13 points at halftime and 11 at the end of the third quarter, but the Cowboys used a 24-11 run in the fourth period to hand the Matadors a 70-68 loss at Goldie Harris Gym on Tuesday.
McCollum whittled away at Seguin’s lead by attacking the paint and scoring in transition, and the Mats were unable to adjust defensively.
“Our mid-line help defense kind of disappeared there in the second half,” Seguin head coach Guy Nowlin said. “We did a good job in the first half of mid-line gap help, and kind of just missed the cue there in the second half. We weren’t there, we weren’t talking efficiently, and they were able to chip away at it little by little.”
The Cowboys tied the game at 67 with 1:42 left. John Jackson hit one of two free throws to put the Mats up by a point with 25 second to play.
McCollum’s Chris Villareal scored the go-ahead bucket on a driving layup and drew a foul with 11 seconds remaining. He drained the free throw to complete the three-point play and put the Cowboys up 70-68.
Jackson had a good look at a potential game-winning three from the right wing on the ensuing possession, but it rimmed out as time expired.
The contest was knotted up at 16 at the end of the first quarter. Seguin outscored McCollum 26-13 in the second period to take a 42-29 cushion into halftime. The Cowboys pulled within three, 49-46, in the third quarter, but the Mats closed the period with eight straight points to take a 57-46 lead into the fourth.
Jackson led all scorers with 25 points. Jakyari Matthews added 14 and connected four times from three-point range. Devin Matthews also reached double figures with 11.
Seguin went 9-13 from three in the first half and finished 12-19 for the game.
Nowlin sees a lot more talent than the 1-7 record would indicate, but says continuity and consistency are still works in progress with seven of the varsity roster’s 12 players coming from the football team.
“We’ve had four practices with the full team so far and up to this point, and we’re in Game 8, so we’re still trying to work on our chemistry and build on team concepts and defensive rotations, which was a big thing, and being able to communicate on the floor,” the coach said.
“Offensively, we’re able to do some damage in transition and shoot the ball well. I think we’re leading the area in different starting lineups thus far, so we’re trying to smooth things out, get guys into roles, and understand what they need to bring to the team and what they need to fulfill for us.”
Kevon Williams contributed seven points for Seguin, John Jones six, and Jeffrey Rodriguez five. Villareal led McCollum (8-6) with 20, and Daylor Gonzales added 15.
The Matadors (1-7) compete in the Navarro tournament this Thursday – Saturday and open the District 26-5A schedule next Tuesday with a 6:45 p.m. home game against Kerrville-Tivy.
Seguin girls earn second straight district win with rout of Lehman
(Kyle) – The Matadors are off to a 2-0 start in the District 26-5A girls basketball race after a commanding 57-20 road win over Kyle-Lehman on Tuesday.
Seguin jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and pushed the margin to 24-7 by halftime. The Mats won the third quarter 15-8 to take a 39-15 cushion into the fourth and outscored the Lobos 18-5 in the final period.
Individual stats were not available at press time.
The Matadors (8-5, 2-0) head to San Antonio for a non-district game at Harlandale this Friday at 6:45 p.m.
Strong second half fuels Navarro girls to 11th straight win, boys come up short in Blanco
(Geronimo, Blanco) – Navarro trailed Medina Valley 24-23 at halftime of Tuesday’s Panthers vs. Panthers basketball matchup in Geronimo, but the home team won the second half 29-21 to notch a 52-45 win at the Navarro Events Center.
The win was Navarro’s 11th straight and pushed the Panthers’ overall record to 15-3.
Laylin Sturm led all scorers with 16 points. Tatum Harborth also reached double figures with 14.
Karlee Koenig, Taylor Helms, and Tegan Harborth contributed six points apiece. Ryanne Hepp and Berklee Andrews each netted two.
Navarro looks to extend its winning streak this Thursday – Saturday in the Moulton Tournament.
The Navarro boys dropped a road game to Blanco 73-41. Individual stats were not available at press time. The Panthers (1-7) host their annual tournament this Thursday – Saturday.
Autry, Bulldogs scorch Comfort in road win
(Comfort) – Ryen Autry pumped in 29 points and went 7-11 from three-point distance to help the Marion boys basketball team roll past Comfort 64-31 in the Bobcats’ home gym on Tuesday.
Autry also contributed five rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocked shots.
Kadeem Blyden scored 12 points, Dominic Castellanos finished with 11, and they both came up with three steals. Jon Padron nabbed a team-high four steals and scored eight points. Richard Rayos added three points, and Lane Pawelek hit a free throw.
As a team, the Bulldogs shot 51 percent overall and 42 percent from beyond the arc.
Marion (7-1) plays in Navarro’s tournament this Thursday – Saturday.
Marion girls hold on for home win
(Marion) – The Marion girls basketball team is back above .500 on the season at 7-6 after outlasting Bandera 39-37 in the Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs matchup at MHS.
Joslyne Williams led all scorers with 15 points.
Sarah Cook added 12 to go with nine rebounds and two steals.
Laney Osborne pulled down 11 rebounds and A.J. Jones grabbed 10. Kaelyn Taylor distributed three assists.
Signe Rabenaldt contributed seven points. Taylor and Osborne each put in two, and Breelon Allen connected on a free throw.
Marion (7-6) heads to the Fredericksburg Tournament this weekend.
