Christian Cupboard records largest donation to date thanks to local church

(Seguin) – Seguin’s food pantry, The Christian Cupboard has received its largest food donation ever.  Thanks to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the cupboard recently received 42,000 pounds of non-perishable foods.

Bishop Tim Bird says the food was delivered Thursday morning to the Christian Cupboard. He says it was a joyful sight to see the 24 pallets of food being unloaded.

“The bad part about it is we could only deliver a semi-full at a time so until yesterday, they weren’t able to handle 24 pallets of food. Otherwise, we would be able to do a lot more, but we hope to extend and support that organization for a very long time in the future,” said Bird.

Bird says the food was more than just a one-time contribution, he says it’s a reflection of the continued partnership with the non-profit organization.

“The humanitarian efforts that we have in our church really extend to whatever needs are in the communities whether that is hurricane relief or whether it’s growing foods and processing and canning and providing all of that aspect to get whatever is needed. We identified a need here right before COVID when a lot of the volunteers that were there had to step away. Our youth stepped in and really went to work and when they were out of school, they took the opportunity every Tuesday to come down and work and we have just kept it up,” said Bird.

Bird says The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints works continuously to help meet the needs of those it serves.

All that stuff, we grow. We process it. We can it. The label is Deseret Farms on there and that’s part of our Bishop Store House. We have one in the region here and it’s down in San Antonio and it’s for that purpose. So, local bishops in the area, we take care of the needy and that’s one of the arms that we have reach into and we can provide food to people in need,” said Bird.

Volunteers at the Christian Cupboard say it was incredible to witness the large donation come through its doors. Executive Director Regina Lee says she appreciates the food and thanks the church and its congregation for working to help feed families.

“We don’t have to order string beans, peas or corn for a year. So, it’s nice to know that your shelves are going to be stocked with a certain item. It’s wonderful. You can’t even imagine the amount of food it is so it’s going to make a difference, but it will be given out within sixth months,” said Lee.

Lee says a variety of other types of food donations are still need being accepted. The Christian Cupboard is currently hosting its annual Food Drive. Food donations can be dropped off at the Christian Cupboard located at 516 N. Camp St.  A 24 hour drop off box is located on the northern end of the building. Food items can also be donated this week at Seguin Radio KWED located at 609 E. Court Street. The radio station lobby is open weekdays between 8:30 and 3 p.m.
