Navarro girls rally past SMHS, win home tournament title
(Geronimo) – Navarro used a 32-17 run in the second half to come storming back from a 14-point halftime deficit and claim the Gold Bracket championship trophy of the Runnin’ Lady Panthers Basketball Tournament with a 48-47 win over San Marcos Home School on Saturday.
The win capped a 5-0 week in tournament play, pushed the Panthers’ winning streak to 10 games, and moved the team’s overall record to 14-3.
Tatum Harborth scored 16 points to lead Navarro in the championship game, Laylin Sturm added 14, and Tegan Harborth put in 10. Those three players were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Karlee Koenig chipped in with four points. Ryanne Hepp and Taylor Helms scored two apiece.
Navarro opened the tournament with a pair of lopsided wins on Thursday, crusing past Lockhart 68-12 and Gregory Portland 80-27.
Taylor Helms led all scorers against Lockhart with 17 points. Sturm added 12, and Tatum Harborth finished with 10.
Sturm scored 16 to lead three Panthers in double figures against Gregory Portland. Tatum Harborth netted 15, Tegan Harborth 14. Berklee Andrews contributed eight points.
Navarro finished pool play with a 61-36 win over Del Rio on Friday and edged Somerset 62-60 in the Gold Bracket semifinal.
Sturm led the Panthers with 12 points against Del Rio. Helms and Hepp reached double digits with 10 apiece. Tatum and Tegan Harborth each put in seven.
The Panthers came back from a 37-30 deficit at halftime to beat Somerset in the semifinals. Tatum Harborth paced the offensive effort with 16 points, Sturm added 15, and Tegan Harborth totaled 13. Helms contributed nine points.
Navarro (14-3) hosts Medina Valley on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Seguin girls finish second in Silver Bracket of Navarro tourney
(Geronimo) – Seguin came up short to La Vernia 33-26 in the Silver Bracket championship game Saturday to cap a 3-2 weekend in the Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers Basketball Tournament.
The Matadors opened pool play on Thursday with a 70-14 win over Schertz-John Paul II, and dropped the second game to Somerset 59-50.
Seguin finished pool play on Friday with a 39-21 win over Lockhart. The Mats advanced through the Silver Bracket semifinals in Friday’s second game with a 57-30 win over Floresville.
Individual stats were not available at press time.
Seguin (7-5, 1-0) looks to go 2-0 in District 26-5A on Tuesday with a 6:45 road game at Kyle-Lehman.
Mixed results for Seguin boys in home tournament
(Seguin) – Seguin logged its first win of the season and suffered three losses during the Matador Classic boys basketball tournament at Goldie Harris Gym last Thursday and Saturday.
The Matadors fell to San Antonio-LEE 78-59 on Thursday, but finished the day with a 69-56 win over San Antonio-Memorial.
John Jones led four Seguin players in double figures in the win over Memorial with 20 points. Jeffrey Rodriguez added 13, John Jackson and Kevon Williams 10 apiece.
Jackson and Williams netted 14 points apiece in the loss to LEE. Jones chiped in with 11.
Seguin wrapped up the tournament Saturday with a 76-67 loss to San Antonio-Stevens and an 86-68 setback to Sam Houston.
Jackson scored 18 points against Stevens. Rodriguez added 17, R-Teston Tucy 13.
Jackson pumped in 26 in the loss to Sam Houston and Williams finished with 22. Jones also reached double figures with 10.
Seguin (1-6) plays host to San Antonio-McCollum at Goldie Harris Gym on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Marion teams fall in championship games of home tourney
(Marion) – The Marion boys’ basketball team’s season opening six-game winning streak ended Saturday with a 74-67 loss to Wimberley in the championshp game of Marion’s annual tournament.
The Marion girls also reached the title game of their home tournament, but fell to Devine 67-24.
Ryken Autry poured in 26 points to lead the Bulldogs in the boys title game. Autry went 10-17 on overall field goal attempts and 4-10 from three-point range.
Richard Rayos added 13 points on 5-5 shooting and made all three of his threes. Dominic Castellanos collected 11 points, seven assists, and two steals. Kadeem Blyden reached double figures with 10 points.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a pair of wins on Friday, 55-43 over Davenport and 97-54 over New Braunfels Christian Academy.
Castellanos led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed three steals against Davenport. Blyden contributed 14 points and nine rebounds. Autry netted 11 points and dished out three assists.
Blyden erupted for 29 points on 12-14 shooting in the Friday win over NBCA and shut down the paint defensively with five blocks.
Autry shot 10-16 overall and 5-9 from three to score 27 points. He also distributed four assists. Fernando Romero had 11 points and three steals. Castellanos ended up with 10 points.
The Marion boys (6-1) travel to face Comfort on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
The Marion girls won the first four games of the tournament before falling to Devine in the championship.
The Bulldogs rolled past Davenport 52-42 and Dilley 58-41 on Thursday. Marion followed with wins over the New Braunfels JV 30-29 and the Marion JV 64-29 on Friday.
The Marion girls (6-6) have a home game against Bandera on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
