Matadors chase share of district title in regular season finale vs. Dripping Springs, Friday game to air on KWED
(Seguin) – Seguin can claim a share of the District 12-5A-Division I football championship with a home win over Dripping Springs in the final game of the regular season on Friday at Matador Stadium.

The 6-3 Matadors are 5-1 in district play under first-year head coach Craig Dailey and kept their district title hopes alive with a 35-16 road win over Kyle-Lehman last Thursday.

The Tigers, led by seventh-year head coach Galen Zimmerman, enter Friday with an unblemished 9-0 season mark and a 6-0 district record after claiming the inside track to the outright district title and top playoff seed with an eye-popping 52-7 dismantling of former district co-leader Buda-Johnson last week.

Dripping Springs averages 53.8 points and 521.4 total yards per game, and the catalyst in that attack is junior quarterback Austin Novosad. Last year’s District Offensive Newcomer of the Year has competed 64 percent of his passes this season for 2,774 yards, 36 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

The top weapons around Novosad include sophomore receiver Kyle Koch (51 rec., 923 yds., 17 TD), and running-backs Preston Alford (907 yds., 20 TD) and Luke Hudson (618 yds., 5 TD).

“Probably the most talented offense we’ve seen this year no doubt, the most balanced, and the quarterback is probably one of the best ones I’ve seen in the last five to ten years – he’s a pretty good football player,” Dailey said. “Defensively, we’re just going to give them a bunch of looks, hopefully not let him stand back there, and make them drive down the field. They get a lot of big plays, so we’re going to try to force him to throw to his second and third options.”

The Seguin defense looks to repeat its performance from two weeks ago, when it held a Buda-Johnson team averaging 54 points to a season-low 14. The Matadors, led by All-District returnees Ian Box, Allen Martinez, John Michael Mata, Evrin Contreras, and R-Teston Tucy, have been salty on that side of the ball for the duration of district play, allowing just 14.8 points per contest against 12-5A-Division I competition.

On the offensive side of the ball, Seguin looks to stay ahead of the chains and sustain drives against an aggressive Dripping Springs defense that forced four turnovers and recorded five sacks against Johnson last week. Safety Shel Hudson (2 Int.) and defensive end Wyatt Leschber (3 sacks) are the All-District returnees and senior leaders on that unit. Junior linebacker Bryson Amrine, the son of Tigers defensive coordinator and former Seguin assistant Marte Amrine, leads the Tigers with 65 tackles on the year.

Seguin’s sophomore running-back John Jackson is just 42 rushing yards away from 1,000 with 958 and seven touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Troy Falgout enters Friday with 1,435 passing yards and 13 touchdowns after going 14-19 for 236 yards and three scores against Lehman last week.

Junior receiver Devin Matthews is closing in on a 1,000-yard season as well with 966 and 11 touchdowns on 46 catches. He pulled in eight receptions for 196 yards and all three Falgout TD passes last week.

A Seguin win would produce a shared district title with Dripping Springs and Buda-Johnson, and the positive points tiebreaker would determine the top three playoff seeds in that scenario.

This is the fourth straight year the Matadors and Tigers have faced each other late in the season with playoff seeding and district title implications on the line. Seguin won two of the previous three, including a 70-63 shootout in Dripping Springs last year.

Friday’s kickoff at Matador Stadium is slated for 7 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:15 with the Navarro and Marion coaches’ shows.

Navarro closes regular season with home game vs. YMLA

(Geronimo) – The playoff-bound Panthers look to secure the No. 2 seed in the District 14-4A-Division II football race when they host San Antonio-Young Men’s Leadership Academy at Erwin-Lee Field on Friday.

Navarro is 6-2 overall in Rod Blount’s fourth season as head coach, 2-1 in district play after blanking Austin-Achieve 88-0 last Friday.

YMLA dropped to 3-5 on the season with a 1-2 district mark in a 48-21 loss to Manor-New Tech last Thursday.

The Lions have had their moments offensively this season, averaging 22.7 points behind the skill position trio of quarterback Aidan Delgado, running-back Aaron Pinckney, and receiver Jamerrick Brown. Delgado enters Friday with 1,095 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Pickney comes in with 854 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Brown has 23 catches for 621 yards and five scores.

The sledding figures to be tough for YMLA against a Navarro defense surrendering just 17.4 points per game while holding opponents to a 32.4 perceont conversion rate on third down.

Six different Panthers have recorded interceptions this season – Jaxen Monkerud (2), Nick Schwarzlose, Landary Blackburn, Diego Chapa, Antoine Mebane, and Jacob Frederick.

Navarro’s offensive leaders include fullback Cole Mouser (747 yards, 14 TD), halfback Brody Whitson (576 rushing yds., 150 rec. yds., 8 TD), quarterback Nick Billings (793 total yds., 11 TD), and receiver Jaxen Monkerud (5 rec., 214 yds., 3 TD).

Friday’s kickoff at Erwin-Lee Field is set for 7:30 p.m. A complete interview with Blount can be heard during the Panther Report at 6:15 p.m. on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.

Bulldogs battle Cougars for final playoff spot in District 14-3A-Division I

(San Antonio) – Marion heads to San Antonio with a chance to grab the fourth and final football playoff seed in District 14-3A-Division I if the Bulldogs can notch a road win over the Cole Cougars on the final Friday of the regular season.

After a 5-0 start to the season, the Bulldogs have dropped three of the last four to enter Friday with a 6-3 overall mark and a 2-3 record in district play.

Marion’s district title hopes ended with setbacks to Jourdanton and Poteet, and a chance at the No. 3 playoff seed evaporated last week in a 40-20 home loss to Randolph.

Fourth-year head coach Ryne Miller says the program’s 22 seniors have displayed strong leadership this week, and that every player knows the team still has plenty to play for.

“The big thing we’ve talked about is the opportunity is still there,” Miller said. “The ball is still in our court, we still control our own destiny heading into the this last week. I told them ‘you guys still have an opportunity to end up with a 7-3 football team overall and going to the playoffs, which is a heck of a football season. Our guys have had a great week of practice, and they’re up for the challenge, they’re excited, and Cole’s a great team, but we feel like we can go in there, and as long as we execute, and take care of it, and play with intensity, we’ll walk away with a win.”

Cole (5-4) is also 2-3 in district play with losses to Jourdanton, Poteet, and Randolph. The Cougars kept their playoff hopes alive with a convincing 34-14 road win over Cotulla last Friday.

The Cole offense is built around the versatile skills of senior quarterback Walker Cunningham. He totaled 134 passing yards, 82 rushing yards, and two touchdowns in the win over Cotulla last week.

Marion’s statistical leaders include junior running-back Aidan Rios (1,043 yds., 14 TD), senior quarterback Tanner Beakley (966 passing yds., 366 rushing yds., 14 total TD), and junior receiver Dominic Castellanos (32 rec., 558 yds., 7 TD). On the defensive side, junior linebacker Kross Kelso enters Friday with a team-high 94 tackles and 15 tackles-for-loss.

Friday’s kickoff at Cougar Stadium on the Cole campus in tabbed for 7:30 p.m. A complete interview with Miller can be heard during the Bulldog Report between 6:20-6:30 on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.
