(Seguin) — The three victims killed in a fiery collision Thursday afternoon on Interstate 10 have been identified. Those pronounced dead include 48-year-old Jason A. Howell of San Antonio, 36-year-old Jason Sanchez of San Antonio, and 37-year-old Joseph D. Cline of Marion.
Two others who sustained various injuries were transported to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for treatment. Another pair involved in the collision was also treated and released at the scene. A Seguin Police Officer was also among those treated and released from Guadalupe Regional Medical Center after sustaining injuries when trying to heroically save the victims.
Seguin Police and Seguin Fire/EMS officials say the accident involved five vehicles at the I-10 East overpass at State Highway 123 Bypass.
The accident was reported at 2:56 pm. A preliminary investigation reveals that the semi-truck transporting meat products was traveling down the roadway when it was cut-off by vehicles attempting to avoid TxDOT workers in the area.
The driver of the semi-truck braked abruptly to avoid a collision, causing the truck to lose its load on the highway, resulting in slick road conditions.
Another semi-truck heading the same way swerved to avoid the crash but collided into a guardrail. The semi-truck burst into flames on impact and in a chain reaction, four additional vehicles were involved.
Justice of the Peace Darrell Hunter has ordered autopsies on the victims. Their bodies have been transported to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Seguin Police officials say the accident remains under investigation.
