Matadors roll past Roosevelt in volleyball season opener

(Seguin) – Seguin opened the 2021 volleyball season in dominant fashion Tuesday night with a 3-0 sweep of San Antonio-Roosevelt (25-16, 25-14, 25-14) at Goldie Harris Gym.

Reese Brittain paced the Matadors’ attack with 10 kills and 15 assists.

Regan Schmidt also put away 10 kills. Keighly Dailey and Julie Kocian added five apiece, and Dailey sent a six aces over the net to finish with a team-high 12 points .

Lizzie Suarez set for 12 assists, collected eight digs, and delivered four aces. Ashlie Aguilar served four aces as well. Aguilar and Dailey each totaled five digs.

Riley Jahns came up with a solo block and two block assists. Ashley Lingueno also recorded a solo block.

The Matadors played at a consistently high level, giving up three consecutive points to Roosevelt only once in each set.

“We did a great job of coming out with a lot of confidence, and we really did a great job of just staying steady throughout the whole match,” Stanley said. “Our motto is always don’t let them get three in a row, and we did a great job pretty much that if they did get three in a row, we were siding out that next ball, so that’s something we focus on a lot.”

Seguin returns to a conventional schedule this season with tournaments slated for each of the next three weekends. The UIL eliminated August tournaments in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Stanley hopes the benefits of the additional repetitions will be evident when district play begins.

“We usually play with lineups and things during tournaments, so it’s nice to be able to do that” the coach said. “They were teasing me earlier that we went through 10 different lineups (last year) and we only had 18 games, or 20 games or something, and so we’re trying to find the right chemistry, the right group. Sometimes it’s not your best hitter. It’s just the person that has the right chemistry out there, that keeps everybody loose and playing well. I’m really excited that we get to travel this weekend, go to Westwood, get some team bonding in. It’s going to be great. Looking forward to it.”

The Matadors (1-0) compete in the Round Rock-Westwood Tournament this Thursday through Saturday.
