(Seguin) — The Lions clubs in Seguin and Geronimo are once again coming together to gather school supplies for children in the community. The Seguin ISD announced earlier this summer that it was going to provide school supplies for all students this year. That means the need is not as great this year. But Lions club members say their Pack the Bus campaign will still continue, because there are still lots of families in the area that can use the help.
Lion’s club member Suzanne Sanders has been the driving force behind the Pack the Bus campaign each year. Sanders says because Seguin ISD students are getting their supplies from the district, this year’s Pack the Bus will instead focus on students in the Navarro ISD.
Sanders says that Lions club members and other volunteers will be out collecting monetary donations at various locations around town. They will also be accepting funds and new school supplies at the Pack the Bus headquarters, that will be set up from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Plaza Del Rey shopping center on East Court Street.
“This weekend, on Saturday, we will be out collecting for Pack the Bus. We will be at the donut shop on Kingsbury and Austin streets. We will also be at the intersection there in front of Goodwill (on East Court Street). We are still going to be collecting this year. Since they are already covering school supplies for the Seguin ISD kids, we will be collecting for…Navarro (ISD) students, because they don’t have programs like this,” said Sanders.
Sanders says she hopes that people aren’t still confused about Pack the Bus. She says it’s still going on this year, and it’s going to collect items to help students here in the Seguin area. She said even with the Seguin ISD purchasing supplies for all its kids, there are still other needs within the community.
“At first I thought that I wasn’t doing it (this year) either, but then I found out that we still have people here who still need help. Not only that, but I have to say that the kids, that come help with Pack the Bus from Geronimo, are wonderful. They make it happen. They really do. They stay all day. They work hard, and I feel like if any school deserve somebody to help them out — they do,” said Sanders.
In addition to the Pack the Buss collection drive on Saturday, the Geronimo Lions Club will also be raising funds for Pack the Bus during its First Friday Feast, slated for Friday night at the Big Red Barn. Fish and steak plates are $15 each, and musical entertainment will be provided by the Wyatt & Charlie Show. Meal tickets, for Friday’s fundraiser, can be purchased at the door.
