Skeletons to join scarecrows throughout downtown Seguin

Skeletons to join scarecrows throughout downtown Seguin

(Seguin) – Get ready to overstuff or use the “bone” minimum in creating your fall displays for this year’s Downtown Scarecrow & Skeleton Contest.

The Seguin Main Street Program has chosen to add skeleton displays to this year’s competition hosted each year throughout Seguin’s downtown.

Main Street and CVB Director Kyle Kramm, says he gives credit to others including former Councilwoman Jet Crabb for coming up with the idea. He says after seeing it in another community, Crabb thought that Seguin ought to give it a try.

“We are continuing with tradition of our scarecrow competition but one thing that we are doing based off of people requesting it is we are adding skeletons so if you want to still do a scarecrow in your storefront window, you can still do that or you can go on ahead and switch it up is year and do a skeleton this year as well,” said Kramm. “So, we are going to see if there is a lot of skeletons this year and it might become an annual scarecrow and skeleton competition.”

Kramm says the contest not only helps to welcome the fall season but also those who travel into the community for the Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo each October.

Kramm says he’s hoping folks get an early jumpstart in the contest so that places around downtown can be secured.

“Anyone is eligible to take part in the contest whether it be a business or a non-profit organization or even sometimes we have individuals who want to participate and so if you are not in the downtown historic district, we will assist you in finding a location to put your display and so, if you don’t want to be judged, you can put your display up anywhere in town but if you want to be judged, you have to be in the historic downtown district,” said Kramm.

Kramm says scarecrows and skeletons must be visible from the street and sidewalk. He says they must also be family friendly.

“The most important rule is that the entry should be family friendly so it shouldn’t be too scary or inappropriate,” said Kramm.

Award certificates will be presented to the top entries that show creativity and uniqueness.

Applications to enter the contest can be found on the city of Seguin’s website under Main Street at seguintexas.gov. The application can then be mailed to the Main Street Program at 116 N. Camp St or emailed to chopper@seguintexas.gov. To be included in the contest, all applications must be received no later than Oct. 1.

All entries will remain in place through Oct. 30.
