(Seguin) – Texas Lutheran University’s Sofia Vega has been named to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s 30th Anniversary Women’s Tennis Team.
Vega is one of 15 former or current SCAC women’s tennis players to be named to the anniversary team.
The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference is announcing 30th Anniversary teams in 19 sports throughout the 2020-21 academic year. The league selected 15th Anniversary teams during the 2005-06 academic year – those selections can be found here.
The SCAC’s 30th Anniversary teams were selected by present coaches, administrators and/or conference office personnel. Athletes who participated in conference competition between the fall of 2005 through the spring of 2020 and had been named to at least two All-SCAC teams and/or were selected as a Player-of-the-Year in their respective sport were eligible for selection.
Among current league members, Trinity led the way with eight selections to the exclusive team followed by Southwestern University with two selections and Texas Lutheran University with one honoree. Sewanee paced former league members with two student-athletes named to the squad while DePauw University and Rhodes College had one honoree each on the all-anniversary team.
A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico and Corpus Christi, Texas (Flour Bluff HS), Vega played in the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships four times. She finished her TLU career with a school record 105 singles wins and a 105-19 overall singles mark. Her singles winning percentage of .846 is a school record.
Vega also holds the TLU career record for doubles victories (64), and she has the top-four single-season win totals in singles play. She set the school record for single-season wins twice, with 27-4 seasons in 2013-14 and in 2014-15.
A three-time SCAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year and a three-time All-American, Vega was a two-time TLU Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
Vega was a perfect 6-0 in her three SCAC Championship tournament appearances. She earned All-Tournament honors in those three seasons. She also was a two-time ITA West Region women’s singles champion, earning that accolade in both 2013 and 2014, and she was the West Region Rookie of the Year in 2013.
In 2015-16, Vega went 25-6 and claimed her third consecutive SCAC First Team All-Conference award.
Vega was named the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s West Region winner of the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award.
A two-time Academic All-American, Vega was TLU’s No. 1 women’s singles player and on the No. 1 doubles team for four years. In addition to qualifying for four consecutive NCAA Division III tournaments, she played in two ITA Small College National Championships.
Vega reached the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot in consecutive years after claiming Academic All-District First Team honors two times. Vega received four ITA Scholar-Athlete awards.
In her playing career, Vega was ranked in the Top 10 for women’s singles nationally, and she consistently was ranked in the Top 25 nationally.
A 2016 graduate of TLU, Vega posted a final grade point average of 3.88 as a biology major. She attended Oregon State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with her doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2020. Vega is an associate veterinarian in Corpus Christi.
Vega is married to former Bulldog men’s tennis player and TLU alum Ryan Delcambre. The Delcambres reside in Corpus Christi.
