(Seguin) — The Seguin community is invited to kick off its Independence Day weekend with a tribute to the city’s namesake Col. Juan N. Seguin. Helping to honor the Texas Hero is the Seguin-Guadalupe County Heritage Museum.
Debbie Parker, board secretary and volunteer, says the non-profit museum will be opening its doors tonight for a special unveiling of the new Juan Seguin exhibit. She says folks are invited to stop by before heading over to enjoy Freedom Fiesta in Central Park.
“Juan Seguin’s great grandson contacted Doug Parker my husband. He has Parker City Pharmacy and he’s president of the board of the directors for the museum and said he had a bust that he was having refinished, and it was quite expensive to have done and they wanted to display it somewhere prominent in Seguin and Doug said ‘we’d love to have it!” said Parker.
Parker says the Heritage Museum is excited to host and share the family’s gift with the community. She says they are appreciative to Seguin’s great grandson Albert Seguin Gonzales for loaning such historical items with the museum.
“He brought the bust and he brought all kinds of documents, wonderful documents and also pictures and paintings of Juan Seguin and his wife,” said Parker.
Parker says each person’s visit to the museum today not only allows them a chance to enjoy the exhibit but also provides them a membership to the museum for the next year.
“We are going to have a private unveiling from 4 to 5 p.m. and that’s by invitation only and from 5 to 8 p.m, we’ll be open, and we’ll be serving wine and tea and light horsd’oeuvres. Anyone that wanted to
come to that can come in. They pay $25 but that gives them a year’s membership and that’s what a year membership cost without the event. It helps us as a museum to get new members and it allows them to see the museum and we have really been working hard in revitalizing everything and it just kind of looks beautiful. We had the floors done and we had the four bathrooms completely renovated and redecorated and arranged things and we have new exhibits and it’s quite lovely and we are proud to show it to the public,” said Parker.
The Heritage Museum’s Independence Day Kick-Off Party featuring the Juan Seguin exhibit will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. A private unveiling reception for those with an invitation is scheduled from 4 to 5 p.m. There is no cost for members. Admission for all others is $25 which again includes a year’s membership to the museum located at 114 N. River St.
